And honestly, it's not even that she didn't stay with Barney (although for fuck's sake, you seriously spend an ENTIRE SEASON on their wedding and SO MUCH time on their relationship and just BREAK THEM UP) as to what it says about happy endings for women like Robin (and me).

I will say, although I am obviously not unbiased on the finale, it was a poor choice to spend the entire season on their wedding if that's how they were planning on ending things.

Yep. It's just kind of rude to spend THAT LONG on a wedding and then break them up.

My brain is still laughing at the spoilers like it's some sick joke. I don't have the heart to tell it otherwise because I think it would just combust knowing that HIMYM turned one of her favourite male characters into a creep.

No, seriously. There were times I related so much with Ted because while I'm cynical, there's also a large part of me that's an idealistic romantic that believes in romance and true love and happy endings.

As Lilly said, Ted deserved a really romantic, fantastical love story and what he got was just a creepy and patriarchal retelling of several other 'love' stories. In the end, both him and Robin really did end up settling.

Care to say more about why you felt this was a creepy and patriachal retelling?

Because I feel that the show DID foreshadow how much both Robin and Ted loved each other, but I feel it's a total dick move to have an entire season about a wedding (and really sell Robin and Barney as a couple) just to have them divorce almost immediately.

I'm just pissed that Robin didn't get job AND romantic success until way later in the story.

Basically, I feel this way because of all the points made in this article. (http://bookgeekconfessions.tumblr.com/post/81420831640/an-open-letter-to-the-creators-of-how-i-met-your) The implications behind the HIMYM writers choices are very problematic.

They had lots of opportunities to write a unique story that people in non-traditional relationships could really relate to, but instead they chose to do what every other tv show does and let Ted 'get the girl' despite everything else that was going on in her life.

This was really stupid because what was so great about HIMYM was that it told Ted that he and Robin were not right for each other because they wanted different things, and that was okay. Robin didn't need to be 'saved' from her 'empty' life or compromise her own desires to make Ted happy because her career and circle of friends gave her fulfilment, which was taken away from her so Ted could be the 'hero.'

Also, they killed off the mother so Ted could finally have Robin. That is 100 shades of fucked up. When Charles Dickens pulled that crap at least we knew that divorce was heavily frowned upon, expensive and nearly impossible to gain in Victorian times, what are the HIMYM writer's excuses?

Agree with your comments 100%. Feels like they pissed away the entire season.

The entire season and to be honest, the entire show. Someone on tumblr made a good point when they said: 'The show could have ended on episode one and we'd still be in the same place.'They just threw away a lot of decent character development for a twist ending.

Yeah that's a good point. And I couldn't help but be rubbed the wrong way by Ted not only getting the children he wanted but Robin as well in the end.

*nods* It's like he got to have his cake and eat it too. I don't really care about shipping in HIMYM but at least with Barney, he had to make a choice between having kids or being with Robin and the writers didn't make it seem as if Barney was making a huge sacrifice for Robin. That was so cool.

You're so right.

And ugh, it just makes me so frustrated because WHY they broke up Barney and Robin was just... exactly the reason why TED and Robin would never work. YOU STUPID WRITERS!

That is the best useage of that gif I have ever seen.

You have no idea what this comment means to me. What a compliment.

That's the recap I wrote for it, along with reposting my favorite twitter and tumblr posts. It's horribly spoilery and horribly accurate.

If you want to see the only worthwhile part of the episode, watch this fan-edited ending: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xiLV6y1ufl8

Okay, really old comment, BUT-

Because I hate myself (apparently) I watched the fan-edited episode and then I watched the actual episode and then I watched the episode just before the finale AND MY HEART.

The second to last episode kills me because you can see the writers setting up Robin/Ted (in hindsight, especially) but you also see EXACTLY WHY ROBIN/BARNEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN TOGETHER FOREVER.
