Okay, so I deeply, deeply want to get my text-based fannish fix, so I’ve decided to give this whole dreamwidth thing a shot. I’m going to be attempting to cross-post between the two platforms and see how that goes.

Thus, advice on the following would be helpful:

  • cross-posting: how to not fuck it up

  • how to get the most fannish bang for your buck as far as posting on two platforms

  • something else that you don’t know enough to ask about

  • cool people to follow and cool places to hang out!

Also! I am considering just posting my fic on AO3 and linking it from my lj/dw/tumblr. Does anyone have a reason not to do this?

When I made mine I imported my LJ to it. To crosspost, there is a tab in My Account Settings called Other Sites. My LJ is listed there below Accounts, and there's a checkbox for crossposting by default. Whenever I post on DW, the little box appears checked in the page for my post's draft and I can uncheck it if I want to. I don't remember how to put the LJ in that section in order to crosspost, which is why I mentioned importing first of all, but it should be safe to assume it can be added in that Other Sites tab.

ETA: Sorry I can't help with the other stuff. I follow less DW blogs than LJ right now, particularly because the ones I do follow post much less often than they used to. Some of the ones I do follow have LJ counterparts anyway. But part of it is probably due to my focusing on small fandoms for a good chunk of the last few years. Good luck!

[livejournal.com profile] tigerpetals said it pretty perfectly. ^^

You can import your LJ to your DW - but not vice versa!

Put your LJ in the "Other Sites" and it will give you the option to cross-post.

DW is especially cool because the entries can be really, really long...whereas LJ cuts off at around 65,000 characters and spaces (though I think it's definitely less), DW can pretty much double that.

There are "subject lines" in comments - which can be fun! ^^

When you edit a comment, it shows at the bottom that you did and when - so if you don't want that, don't just edit; delete and re-post. *lol*

Tags, html, icons, inserting pics, lj-cuts, adding friends and groups - all the same. ^^

I happen to like lastfanstanding (http://lastfanstanding.dreamwidth.org/), KakaSaku (http://kakasaku.dreamwidth.org/), kinkfest (http://kinkfest.dreamwidth.org/profile), 3-ships (http://3-ships.dreamwidth.org/profile), and polyfandom (http://polyfandom.dreamwidth.org/profile) - but I'm sure there are way more. ^^

...and I'm EOS_joy (http://eos-joy.dreamwidth.org/) there too. Just saying. ^^

About the last thing, here's my two cents:
I know we all take AO3 for granted nowadays but what if, hypothetically speaking, something were to happen to the archive and all the works that weren't archived anywhere else were lost? That is like, a bookmarker's worst nightmare.. :D
I do believe that redundancy is the key to fanfic preservation and for the sake of all us fans people should consider archiving their fics somewhere else too, even just on a .txt file uploaded on mediafire or the like. ;) - Basically, better safe that sorry, you know? ^^

Also, here's some awesome DW comms...
- fanwork recs comms: bestthingever, beth_h, fanart_recs, the awesome fancake, gensplosion, nemo_recs, podfic_love, recs
- meta comms: metanews, month_of_meta
- plus, some assorted ones: the awesome amplificathon, the awesome fandomcalendar, fandom_stocking, fandomsecrets, festivids, kink_finders, comicbook_icons, snowflake_challenge, tv_talk, scans_daily
Lastly, DW offer every user to possibility to create a feed account from from other sites. I find it very useful, in fact I follow this way several blogs/podcasts like hellotailor_feed, fandomspotting_feed, npr_pchh_feed... ;)

Yes come drink the DW kool-aid. Crossposting, etc. is pretty easy and the FAQ is extremely helpful. (If you were around LJ pre-2010, then a lot of things on DW will look very familiar.) I'm on my phone right now or I'd give you better details lol.

(I'm theladyscribe there, too.)

I only ever post to dreamwidth when I post but I always crosspost to LJ. The best part is if you need to edit your post it updates your LJ post too. That said I'm still more active in LJ than DW so if you find any cool comms over there let me know! :]

Will do!
