I look at it as a pattern of behavior - Gran-Gran not only said, I'm not going to marry Pakku, she did something incredibly brave and independent, plus she actively approved and aided her grandchildren in going off the save the Avatar at 16 and 14. To me, that's a pattern were I would expect at least a decent 'these are the facts of life' approach to follow, but you're right, it doesn't have to.

This is true, but since we're looking at characters and forming opinions based on subtext (if Katara reacts like this to that, then it makes sense to me that... etc) I think arguing which bit of fanon has more canon backing gets dicy.
I think both Zuko and Katara would not admit to knowing anything.
