Actually one thing that makes me said about Avatar, is that just the way the characters turned out, I don't ship any bender/nonbender pairings (one of the many reasons I wished I liked Mai/Zuko). I hate it when couples kind of get segregated by ablilities, you know?
I only have that problem with Sokka, because of how his character is constructed. Even after Sokka's Master, he feels sometimes inadequate and inferior face to his friends and even though, they do occasionally acknowledge his skills, he still gets overlooked by them more than he should. Like in WAT. So, I think he should have a partner that helps him to grow and that he can help to grow as well. Like you said, Sokka and Suki learn a lot from each other.
