Yeah, in that situation, I can see him killing his precious person - but I do agree that he'd kill himself after, or do his level best too. (I always see him as the kind of person who'd commit suicide via over work - just take harder and harder and harder missions alone until he finally wore himself down enough to slip and not make it back alive.)
I guess the mangaka thinks its more romantic and tragic for Itachi to go through with this Terrible Thing... sure, but that doesn't make me feel sorry for Itachi. He's not the victim here, not by any stretch. There were alternatives, he just chose not to take them.
Oh, I don't feel sorry for Itachi in the least. I'm like like, Itachi: so looking for that excuse.
