(Also, I've started to read the manga. Just when I hadn't thought it was possible to dislike Maka's dad more...)

I've never seen/read Soul Eater, but from what I've heard of it, Death Scythe seems to be a well-liked character. (The two fandom secrets of him have the secret person saying they wish their dad was like him.) Why is this? Is he the extremely charismatic asshole type, or the superficially goofy and lovable type, or what?

Oh, god. Hearing that makes me want to yell at them to stop lowering their standards.

Death Scythe's pluses: He loves his daughter to an insane degree. He's a comedic character played for laughs.
Death Scythe's minuses: He's a cheating bastard. He does inappropriate and esteem-wrecking things like agreeing that Maka is a flat-chested girl who doesn't look like a real woman, having his paid-for girlfriend by Maka presents (Maka ended up getting slutty underwear), etc.

Honestly, Stein would make a better father. He would dissect his daughter, but he's put her back together, and he wouldn't to the horrible, foot to gut moves that Death Scythe doesn't without realizing how awful he's being.

Yes. In his defense, he told paid-for girlfriend to buy her a book, but seriously, he couldn't buy it himself?

The fact that he would comment on her chest size is very disturbing to me

So much about Death Scythe is.

And I feel so sorry for Maka too. I really want to read good Soul/Maka the deals with her Daddy issues, or basically, is how Soul Eater>Death Scythe in all ways. I mean, it's even overtly stated that she's making Soul into a Death Scythe partially as revenge against her father.

Yes, it totally is.

I mean, he's played for laughs, so it takes you a minute to realize that JUST EXACTLY HOW LOW A BEING OF SCUM he is, but once it hits you..

And I cannot imagine anyone who has ever seen, like, one episode of the anime who things that this guy even approches being a good father.

We learn in flashbacks that when Maka was young he was pretty good, but now? Total deadbeat.
