Summary: "Tsunade learned all her best jutsus on the battlefield." Tsunade and her daughters.

Tsunade learned all her best jutsus on the battlefield.

Her strength she discovered at Sarutobi-sensei's knee, and it was easy, everything from her gennin days was easy, of course, because she was Princess Tsunade and why wouldn't she be the only one of her team to pass the chuunin exams on the first try?

But the healing... that came when the ANBU team that was supposed to be protecting her were attacked by a squad of Stone nin between the border of Grass and Konoha. Tsunade managed to take out two by herself but even so, the rest managed the other members of the ANBU team. There was only one left uninjured besides her, and before the blood had finished pooling under the bodies of the dead he was kneeling next to one of his teammates, pressing chakra the color of liquid gold into the woman's wounds.

Tsunade went to his side, watched the chakra dance, watched flesh knit together impossibly slowly, blood blooming and clotting from the cleft in the ANBU's belly, and thought, I could do that even better.

Shizune learned too much on the battlefield.

The girl didn't seem to sleep, ever, spent the early hours of the morning huddled on a chair in their hotel room, chewing nervously on a senbon while Tsunade flopped onto the nearest bed and slept off her latest bender.

Tsunade started taking naps in libraries. She wandered into whatever halls of learning whatever town she was in could offer, riffle through the stacks, toss a couple of thick tomes at Shizune's head, and then curl up in an uncomfortable wooden chair to doze until the bars opened.

After three months, Shizune could sleep though two out of three nights and was slicing koi fish apart and fusing them back together.

Sakura didn't learn enough on the battlefield.

She didn't understand that the rules went flaccid and slack when people were trying to kill you, that her stubbornness was more deadly than a well-sharpened kunai, if she used it right. She also had a couple of bad habits that resulted in a note being added to Hatake Kakashi's five inch thick file, the general gist of which was that he was to be given another gennin team when hell froze over.

Within two months of the start of her apprenticeship, Sakura had broken every single bone in both her hands and hummed to herself while she studied the vertebral column.

It is spring and Shizune bustles about organizing paperwork Tsunade doesn't want to do, Sakura nibbles at her pencil and scratches out answers to problems Tsunade has already solved, and the Fifth Hokage feels her feet itch for the feel of a battleground beneath them.

But all of Konoha lay below her window and she had just a few more battles before she gave back her borrowed dream and hand-me-down robes and left for another fight.
