So I'm pretty sure she was intending to do more with them than she ended up doing.

And as for Fakir/Ahiru... this is a 'canon is not a binary' situation. Sure I think they're totally in love, I think the creator has quoted something to that effect, but Ahiru ALSO spends the entire series crushing on and loving Mytho, and Fakir has never SAID anything to the effect of 'I like Ahiru' (quite the opposite in fact).

So I don't find it more canon than, say, Riza/Roy or Kyon/Haruhi.
