I've never been able to interpret Ahiru's love for Mytho as remotely romantic, even when I first saw it.
Well, that's a YMMV thing. To me, they were very clear about the fact that she loved him, even if she gradually came to realize that she wasn't sure WHY she did. And as for not being with him... I don't think that precludes romantic love, and in a sense says MORE about the strength of her feelings that she desperately wanted to be with him and couldn't yet still helped him to the best of her ability.
