We've come along way from the days where we imprisoned people for just being homosexual but we've still got to go a long way before even the BBC will allow homosexual couples to become canon on a family show.
See, I wouldn't be that surprised to see gays on a family-centric BBC show... but I would highly doubt that they'd change a classic, deeply nationalistic myth to do so.
I hope the Merlin/Arthur fandom snaps out of this and tries to be optimistic about season 2 because getting upset over Gwen/Arthur canon is just not worth it. I've learnt that from watching Avatar.

Usually the slash fandom is better about knowing that they're not going to get canon than this.
