I think I've gotten to the point where if something annoys me in a manga or story I'm enjoying, I mentally "fix" it. It's like, "Yes, yes, but these are only the parts the author is telling me about, because he only talks about the stuff he's interested in/his editors tell him he should write." I've done this since I was a kid, even with stories that weren't particularly sexist, but that I needed something more from (I also started writing my own stuff, as I didn't realize you could actually write fanfiction until much much later).

There's one good thing about your experience with Naruto, which is that you've been able to clearly define within yourself what is acceptable to you and what is not. I wonder if I personally, let things go too easily. I guess the best thing you can do, is support and promote and write the type of stories and characters that you like.
