Hell, I wouldn't even recommend him to teach a university-type position. The man is not suited to be a teacher. I've had classes for my major and minor where the teachers were horrible. They knew their stuff and I was in classes only really being taken by people who actually wanted to, but they still were bad teachers.
Snape is an excellent potions master. He is a horrible teacher. Even without Harry there, he still held petty grudges and showed favoritism to his house and all in all acted unprofessional.
Also, he was shafted from doing the position he wanted for years. I also think that he didn't really want to be a teacher, but it was the best chance for a career he had, especially being a former Death Eater. Lucius Malfoy had the money to buy people (either with donations or bribes), but Snape didn't have that luxury. Dumbledore saw this, and gave him a chance.
