Faith wants to be liked, she just doesn't think she deserves it. Buffy unintentionally uses that against her, which leads to her switching to the dark side.
I totally agree, and that's a great way to put it.
There is also that factor that, especially in later seasons, Buffy is well aware that Faith wants what she has, even if Faith isn't pursuing it anymore. Honestly, I think Faith will always want to BE Buffy more than she could ever WANT Buffy.
