Hello, Newest Addiction
So, Community.
I came at this show in a weird way. I kept running into icons for it on the ljs of people who's opinions I respect and then when the finale aired there was a huge burst of posts regarding it on my flist, so I downloaded the first episode. I watch ten second with the ten and hit 'quit.' And then, months later, decided to give it another try and got hooked.
Random thoughts written as I watched:
–I find Jeff and his tallness very hot. Especially when he's dressed as a cowboy.
–I really enjoy Jeff and Britta's back and forth, and how Britta has relationships and character development with Shirely and Annie as well.
–I love Annie and Shirley's BFFness.
–The actor who plays Abed does a better Batman grown than Christian Bale.
–I love Abed and Troy's ending tags. Especially the one for the Halloween episode.
–Annie is adorable. And kind of tragic at the same time.
–Everything with Pierce bores or annoys me. I don't know whether to be approving of Chevy Chase or feel sorry for him.
–Debate 109 was epic. I adored the lightning-bold sudden sexual tension and Jeff and Annie's dancing hug-handshake-pat thing, and I watched the scene where Annie kisses Jeff to win the debate twice. (The song they played right after was pretty kick-ass too.)
–Abed really grew on me. In the beginning, I was like 'please go away,' but starting at the Halloween episode and solidifying "Home Economics" (when he got Britta talk some sense into Jeff, because it was the best thing for Jeff, not Abed) I really, really started to like him.
–I haven't mentioned Britta yet, but I do want it on record that she's awesome. I find her explicit yet not histronic feminism to be almost unique on television and I really like how she's kind of counter-culture in a non-extreamist, non-Panic-Pixie-Dream-Girl way.
–I am ridiculously pleased with the fact that Jeff is a lawyer. Yes, it's an obvious part of his personality, but he's so consistent with it. Every episode, I'm like, 'yep, that dude's a lawyer. A sleazy one, too.' I don't know why it brings me such joy.
–"Your bed-head looks like actual bed-head." The jokes about Jeff's hair never get old. Sue Sylvester, this is how it's done.
–As much fun as watching the gang throw down in a winter wonderland while "Kiss With A Fist" plays, I found it completely unrealistic that Jeff would actually want to fight some over-muscled punk who peaked in high school. Jeff would just act pissed, plan for when he's going to "fight" the guy and then not show up because he had a manicure or something.
–Actually, part of me really wonders if Community only got renewed in midseason and they thought they might not come back. I wasn't a fan of "Investigative Journalism" either. Except for that one scene with Abed and Jeff in the end, where Abed is talking about M*A*S*H and Hawkeye with blood on his face. Normally, I have a ridiculously low tolerance for meta within a show, but on this one, it works.
–re "Romantic Expressionism"
First of all, I love how Britta has very little problems with Jeff, who she might have a thing for, dating his professor (at this point in the narrative), but she does have problems with Annie dating her ex. It nicely puts the emphasis on the ladies (and I love that Annie asked for permission right away.
However, the highlight of the episode has got to be Jeff's "gateway douche bag" speech. Being spoiled for the Jeff/Annie in the finale makes that scene hilarious and self-reflective on Jeff's part.
Question for my flist: What was that scene it like watching that without spoilers?
–Jeff and Britta both do hung-over really, really well. Probably because they both have totally rock and roll sunglasses.
–"You're becoming dangerous. It's those doe eyes. Disappointing you is like choking the little mermaid with a bike chain."
–I really enjoy Jeff and Britta, but I like them best as semi-platonic BFFs. Plus, when one member of a friendship is pysched about getting the other to nail the mom of a bratty teen, I have a hard time reading that relationship as too romantic.
–Jeff, Jeff, Jeff. If you think that post-grad steak dinner is going to be for a party of one, you have not been paying attention.
–Jeff, don't critique the adorable purple blouse with lace insets! It's totally Annie's style (a la a young Emma Pillsbury) and is freaking adorable!
–"Pascal's Triangle Revisited":
First of all, I don't believe either Britta or Slater is in love with Jeff.
Secondly The Jeff/Annie kiss seemed really natural and I like the 'picking the third option'-ness of it. To those of you who watched it without spoilers, was it a shock?
