With the release of the finale book of The Hunger Games Trilogy imminent, it seems like an excellent time for a comment meme to whet fandom's appetite. (Plus I just finished my third reread of the first two books and yet still want more!)

So I present.....

Haymitch, going sober for their sake.

People like to think that going sober takes only little spunk and willpower. That you just need to admit that you have a problem and deal with it. Maybe take that program with 12 steps.

They don't know shit. Haymitch does.

Withdrawal is just a term. No one can imagine what it feels like without experiencing it. Delirium tremens is just a term too. It just sounds more sophisticated than saying that you go shit crazy when you stop drinking. Haymitch doesn't want to go crazy. He doesn't want to feel anything at all, and that's why he drinks. Vomiting and falling on sharp objects on a regular basis is more peaceful than breaking his heart every time he has to lead a new pair of these ragged kids to their early deaths.

Then came the latest pair. The girl almost stabs Haymitch's hand, and the boy takes a fist to his face like he is used to it. Neither of these things is good. They only tell what kind of lives these two have led, what kind of place District 12 is for its children.

It also means that maybe, just maybe Haymitch has got a pair of fighters this year. Haymitch isn't sure if he is supposed to be delighted with the fact or not. It means that he has to start fighting too.

Gah, the comment about Peeta made me sad. This was brilliant!

Thank you! I just finished rereading the book and somehow that punch bothered me more now than the first time. You just don't see it coming, but Peeta acts all cool and grabs some ice.

Thank you! I'm sorry it took so long to review, but I love how you list all the difficulties he has to go through. And I love his observations about Katniss and Peeta and how it kind of forces his mental gears to start turning... if the girl can deliver a hit, and the boy can take a hit, hmm.... crap. I owe it to 'em if they actually stand a chance. Haymitch doesn't get drunk all the time because he's irresponsible, but because he feels his responsibilities too strongly. Nice work!

Thanks! There's so much going on in Haymitch's head that he isn't always the easiest character to write, but I really liked doing this. Good prompt!

Please be kind. I never post my drabbles but something just struck me. :/

It's been years since Haymitch has even remembered what his tributes looked like. Seam or Merchant, or sometimes even in between, they're all the same. Starving and scared, either quietly cowering or shoveling food, never doing anything to prove they could put up even somewhat of a fight. So it's a shock when this year he finds his alcohol knocked across the room and a knife shoved in his face within the first few minutes of meeting his tributes.

Well, good for them. Maybe they'll make it to the top 8 this year, though that's about as unlikely as it is that Haymitch will even remember this train ride. There's something in their eyes, though. A spark he hasn't seen in anyone since he was young. A spark that says I have seen more than I should have in my 16 years. A spark that says I will not take this lying down.

So he makes the hardest decision he's had to make since leaving Maysilee in the arena almost a quarter century ago. He decides to help them. But he is scared, so scared of what this means.

Because this year, for the first time in these children's lifetime, Haymitch will remember their faces, whether they live or not.

I love taking a look through Haymitch's eyes. The last line hits everything home, just how much of a chance he's taking with his own heart by training Katniss and Peeta... and the fact that he can't ignore their potential. I'm so glad you posted it! Thank you! ♥
