Yep, that was implied. I found that one line in the Buriel arc where Nii's master roars something to the effect that the new Sanzo steps over the body of the old, and it made me wonder if whoever killed Nii would inherit the Sutra. And if anyone deserves to kill Nii, it's Yaone.
