I've only recently rediscovered them myself through the game design center at my university and I've kinda fallen in love with the medium.

I would also recommend looking into the German Board Games, which are characterized for being good for groups of people since everyone plays until the very end and they tend to be constructive rather than directly conflict-driven. Settlers of Cataan and Carcassone are fun and pretty accessible for when you get to shopping around.
