Well, if you're fighting the tendency to explain too much, you could always try going the opposite route and try to force yourself to be oblique. While that does run the risk of some readers Not Getting It, it can be particularly rewarding to the ones that do, and very gratifying to the writer when you see folks who manage to figure it out.
