One of the things I keep coming back to with Clint and Natasha is how Clint serves Natasha's story. He exists to give her emotional depth, a tragedy to react to, and the fact that the Avengers has the tension that the movie does is because Natasha cares about and is worried about Clint; because Natasha cares, the audience cares.
