THEY HAD THE CHANCE TO MAKE AN A:TLA MOVIE THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN LESS CRAPPY THAN M. NIGHT'S NIGHTMARE, BUT THEY SAID: "OH WE CAN'T COS WE'VE GOT TO MAKE THIS CARTOON INSTEAD"? WHY COULDN'T THEY JUST HAVE DONE BOTH?!

I will never understand the minds of TV executives Jade.
NOW ALL MY FEELS ARE BACK. I want to make a post of gifs from their season finale interactions (and the Southern Raiders ep). With the crying kitty emoticon between each gif.
The other day I read a tumblr post where the user said: "A:TLA isn't groundbreaking and doesn't deserve the attention or praise it gets."
I was very tempted to write a large post about why this person was wrong because although the show could have been better in some areas, I think it's popular for a reason. It's one of the few contemporary children's shows where the characters are primarily of Asian descent, the girls have agency, the disabled characters have agency and don't have their identities encompassed by their disability, the show deals with a lot of adult issues such as war and abuse in a nuanced way and achieves a nice balance between comedy and drama. Plus, most of the time the morals of the show don't hit you over the head, the characters lead by example or learn from their mistakes.
I'm really mad about how Bryke handled some of the things in A:TLA, but let's not say the show wasn't ground breaking.
from the link: and then remember that time where every single finale basically hinged on zuko/katara interactions leading up to that time they TEAMED UP IN THE FINALE OF THE WHOLE GODDAMN SHOW because the only way to defeat azula was for them to finally bring together their divergent paths
YES, this was so awesome. They fought in epic battles every single finale!! And then they fought together. GAAAHAHHHHH show I miss you. But I'm happy with how you ended. But I miss you.
...even though I'm way bitter about kataang ending, on some secret corner of my heart I'm just glad that our ship wasn't given the crappy characterization they were. If the creators are this bad at writing romance, we kinda got lucky that they wrote ours unintentionally.
The only major flaw I found is that it's fairly predictable. But then again all fantasy adventures are basically the same, so if that bothered me I wouldn't be a genre fan. The novelty of ATLA is all in the wrapping: different cultures, different magic system, different contextual philosophy in the narrative.
As far as characterization goes, the series was excellent, and far beyond what you usually get in children's programming. The emotional gravity of stories were validated with justice, and OMG, the continuity was awesome. So many tiny continuity gags where an item or image started in season 1 then popped up two seasons later in a new place or new circumstances.
*laughs* I don't think it was so much that she didn't think the show wasn't original, as much as:
1. She didn't appreciate or realise what the show did for minorities. I had followed her for a while on tumblr before I got tired of her internalised racism and her inability to understand why gizoogle is racist or why people are allowed to be pissed off about whitewashing. She'd make a good example of the 'white feminist' (people who care about the rights of women but not about the rights of other minorities or oppressed groups who also fit under the category of women).
2. She's still butthurt about Zutara not being canon. Normally, I wouldn't use this as a reason to not take someone seriously, because I'm still in mourning over Zutara's potential. However, her butthurt has led her to say a lot of childish things about other members of the fandom and some of the characters. She actually compared Aang to Joffrey. Joffrey. Aang's immature sometimes and makes a lot of mistakes he's not held accountable for in the narrative, but Joffrey is a despot who finds enjoyment in violence and the suffering and pain of others. Let's not compare an immature adolescent to a cruel dictator. I know I've said some really uncalled for things in my adolescence but at least now I have the sense to see how ridiculous I was being.

Definitely not someone to hang around with.

#forever bitter
Seriously, I spent about ten minutes ranting to my friends about this.

augh
did you hear the story about how instead of getting The Search [for Ursa] as an animated film we got books 2-4 of Korra instead
actually now that I remember that The Search is probably full of bad shipping I'm a little less bitter but still
what a terribly depressing reminder to begin my day

SO YES WATCH, YOU MUST.

Honestly, since I know I would have had to watch Aang and Katara kissing and possibly Mai and Zuko as well, I'm just fine that we didn't get that.

Wow, sounds like SOMEONE is buying into the myth of originality.

Thank you for putting things into perspective, I'm glad the movie didn't get made now.

Yeah, that is still 100% factually incorrect.

I love how you use that as a tag on tumblr. Because seriously.
We could have had it all.
Rolling in the deep.
