Warning: the next slew of posts are going to be expansions of comments, because that's how I roll.
First,
mollivanders and I were talking about early Lizzie/Darcy (LBD) and I said:
I feel like Darcy originally “couldn’t look away” from Lizzie for the same reasons that he is in love with her at the end (her passion, her expressiveness, that she is his intellectual equal, that she is witty) but his love is SO MYOPIC. I firmly believe that Darcy NEVER ONCE actually considered that Lizzie might not be into him; basically, his love was selfish and entirely about his feelings. And on Lizzie’s part, I think she, while being attracted to his face (and, in the LBD-verse) the fact that he’ll actually have an opinion and a debate with her, truly, 100% dislikes him for what are VALID REASONS. He did diss her! He did break up her sister’s relationship! (There is also the Wickham thing, but that is the only piece of why Lizzie initially disliked him that is not 100% factually true!)
Basically, that first proposal HAD to end in rejection, because Darcy needed to look at himself from Lizzie’s eyes and I think Lizzie learning the truth of things and then seeing Pemberley with this sense that it was something she might have had but wouldn’t now (and by seeing Pemberely, seeing all the good qualities of Darcy that hadn’t been on display before) was really pivotal to why they’ll be able to last long-term/ their overall character development.
And because it never gets old, a supercut of Lizzie insulting Darcy:
