Yeah, I'm not supercrazy about my ships - I can handle Zuko and Katara with other people (especially since I know Katara/Aang is what the show's creators are shipping) but Mai as a Fire Lady... she and Zuko where horrible together. She feeds his worst tendencies, and frankly, the BEST outcome for that marriage that I can see is some cold thing where she has nothing to do with ruling and complains of boredom while Zuko tries to rebuild the Fire Nation and wonders when her ennui stopped being sweet and became annoying. (Have an emotion damn you!)
Actually, I heard the contrary. I think BooterFreak confirmed that Maiko is the most HATED pairing in the fandom. And I've seen threads that could back this up, not just in shipping coms, but in coms like capslock_atla (they were killing the pairing!)
Good for capslock! I'm glad I'm not alone, but there are a couple really good authors and friends of mine who ship it, and I'm like, 'why?' (But I bite my tongue, because I have friends who say the same thing to me about Zutara, or at least think it, I'm sure.)
I'd hate to see Katara have to play hen mother for the rest of her life. I'd really like her to end up with someone, in a romantic sense, with someone who doesn't have to depend on her so much. Zuko and Haru are good examples, because they've proved that they're sensible, and don't need to be mothered or have things fixed for them.
*nods* And Zuko would protect her without ever forgetting how capable she is, which, to me, is really sexy. (I need to find a good plotbunny for something like that -Zuko taking care of her... well, actually I do, it's just a long, long Bluetara going to be AU off the latter end of the second season, and that I think is going to be my fun, frothy just-for-me fic.)
But one of my favorite pieces of fanon that I've seen several places is Katara being attracted to Zuko because when they need to shop for supplies he's practical, while everyone else would buy frivolous things.
Yeah, I think Jet honestly cared for Katara, and I know she was very attracted to him. In my head, there was serious makeout-age going on when they were both offscreen.
And my mother is just awesome. I love that we can share things like Avatar, and agree on our OTPs.
