Realistically? If my boyfriend, my childhood sweet heart left me with a note, a NOTE, instead of saying goodbye face to face, to go and join the Avatar, destroy the society which has been keeping my family's financial and overall well being secure, I would be PISSED. So angry, it would be pretty hard for me to forgive him.

But, see you have emotions. *giggle* I agree with this all by the way - or to phrase it another way, if Mai was picking Azula or Zuko, I cannot imagine her ever picking Zuko. (I'm still not convinced that Azula didn't strongly encourage Mai to make of move of Zuko, or at least let Mai know Azula approved.

With Kaataag, I find it easy to write out of because of the age, 'I love you but I don't love you' and the fact that I highly doubt that they're going write anything beyond a couple chaste kisses. (Whereas, if in the final scene of Zuko we see him as Fire Lord dating Mai... well, that's a much more rigid culture socially, imho - it's harder to go, 'they realized it wasn't working, and split.'

Even J.K knew that you didn't go off and walk into the sunset with your first boy/girlfriend! And to be honest, she was a little poor in writing the more romantic aspects of her story.

The latter books feel like reading fanfic to me for just that reason. I was like, 'this is like fanfic! Only the fanfic I read was better.' I have to say, scarring from Rowling is one reason I'm so twitch about what Mike and Bryan might do.
