I am not even going to start telling you about everything that sucked about my day. Let me just skip to the end, the absolute worse, where at 1:25 (I leave at 1:30) the guy who had earlier made an inappropriate comment when I said, "I can ring you up." noticed I had an Obama sticker, and wanted to know why I was voting for him.

Me: I like his plan.

Him: What plan? *voice gets loud* [something, something] what about his radical Muslin background?

Me: What radical Muslin background?

Him: His father was a radical Muslim.

Me: I'd check your facts.

Him: It's not cause I'm a conservative! I'm not a McCain man, as far as I'm concerned he's a liberal too, there hadn't been a true conservative in Washington since Roland Regan.

Me: Look, I really don't want to have this conversation with you, I leave in five minutes.

He harangues me some more.

Me: Look, I don't want to discuss this with you, I'm not telling you how to vote.

I go to put in my time, say goodbye to Normally Awesome Girl, and as I'm walking out he goes, "I didn't mean to offend you," something something, and I go, "I am not offended. I just worked an eight hour shift and I don't want to have this conversation with you."

Him: "I don't see what your job has to do with it!"

Me: I don't want to have this conversation.

*leaves*

What really sucks in that since this guy comes in every fucking day, I'm going to have to see him again, and I'm going to have to tell the boss this happened (their friends) and hopefully she'll tell him to never try to talk politics with me again.

To be fair, I don't like Obama. (shocking, I know.) I don't like McCain, either. I hate it, though, that people try to talk politics with total strangers. I promise you, nothing you say is going to change the way I vote, and your opinion verses my opinion is stupid.

I have no problem with people not liking Obama. (I'm curious why you don't, though. Is it his supporters? Because I've heard other people complain about that.)

I hate it, though, that people try to talk politics with total strangers.

Yes. And he wasn't even talking politics. He was clearly looking for someone to shout at, and the fact that he decided to go for the female barista half his age is one in a long list of reasons why I kind of loath him at the moment.

I promise you, nothing you say is going to change the way I vote, and your opinion verses my opinion is stupid.

Exactly. And if we were, you know, going to talk politics with both of us knowing that and sincerely interested in the other persons reasoning, it would actually be an pleasant verbal exchange.

Ha! As much fun as a friendly debate would be, I don't feel as though I know enough about either candidates to debate it correctly.

My problems with Obama stems mostly from religious views. That, and I tend to disagree with the liberal agenda on a whole anyway, and he's a little too much of extreme liberalism for me.

Either way, thanks for not being like some of my RL friends, who, upon hearing that I don't support Obama, boo and me and become very personally involved with 'educating' me over how wrong I am. >.

I feel the same way. I feel confident enough to know who I've voting for, but I don't feel like I know enough to have a debate. (That is actually one reason I resisted getting bumperstickers and t-shirts, because I felt like if I was advertising my political choices, I should be REALLY well informed.)

Either way, thanks for not being like some of my RL friends, who, upon hearing that I don't support Obama, boo and me and become very personally involved with 'educating' me over how wrong I am. >.

You're very welcome. Part of me might be tempted, except I don't want to be like the asshole I had to deal with today, plus, the great thing about a democray is that -SHOCKER!- we don't have to agree completely about all things!

Ugh. See if he really wanted to engage you in a political discussion, after you said you liked his plan, he would say, "What parts do you like the most?" or something similarly open and dialogue. Unfortunately, he just wanted a fight.

I hope tomorrow is better!
Monday, June 9th, 2008 11:26 pm (UTC)
Me too. Guh. The fact that I have to be back there in 12 hours is revolting.

And no, he certainly did not want a discussion, he wanted to tell me I was wrong, and had CLEARLY been looking for an Obama supported to ambush.

I hear that kind of crap down here too. I can never decide which is more hilarious, Obama as SEKRIT MUSLIM or McCain as SEKRIT LIBERAL. Oh ignorance!

It BURNSSSSSS!!!!!!!

(Did I tell you guys about the lady who didn't believe in global warming?

You would think being from the South I wouldn't be surprised by these kinds of things, but it still mystifies and pains me.

Oh God. What reason did she have for her state of denial?
Tuesday, June 10th, 2008 01:21 am (UTC)
I got into that a bit more here:

http://redbrunja.livejournal.com/152138.html#cutid1

but in short, No. There is no reason for her state of denial.

UGH. Major ugh. I guess that brings us full circle back to common courtesy and not bothering nice baristas when they're busy at work with ignorant political conspiracy theories...
Tuesday, June 10th, 2008 01:18 am (UTC)
Exactly.

Yes. I am going to be so, so glad when I quit in September to go back to college. (And I honestly think the location we're in, combined with the clientele the place attracts, makes it worse than it would be otherwise.)

And no, that's not patronizing at all! I actually think I handled it well myself - once I realized he didn't really want to have a civil conversation, I didn't play the game by his rules.

(I had a guy who came in every day write up an order while I was insanely, wildly busy, walk behind the counter and add it to the row of orders that was already up. He really pushed the line a few times with that kind of thing, and when you are under a lot of pressure it is nothing short of infuriating.)

That is just beyond the pale.

I have to admit, I think working in that cafe gave me an irrational atred of living in Australia

*jaw drops* Australia? That was Australia? Oh my god, I can hardly believe it. When I went there everyone was so nice to me and my mother.

I mean, working in a cafe is wonderful. I'm sure you'll enjoy your remaining time there. >_

*snerk* Yeah. On the whole, actually, I really like barisa-ing. I've just had a bad couple of shifts.

Oh, I totally understand about the limited community thing.

And that is way, way too many hours to be working at any job ever.

We don't make pictures on our coffee but I would love too. (I'm not actually supposed to do foam, but I totally due.)

Yeah, justifiable.

Also, where are you living now, if you don't mind me asking. (I'm asked in regards to state or country).

Awesome. SF is one of the few big cities I think I could handle living around/near. And I actually have family in that area.

Secret Muslim my ass, he goes to chrch every Sunday and doesn't have SEKRIT Friday meeting (that's when Muslims go to their church)

I hate prejudiced people like that. Have your own political views, fine, but at least be informed about it.
Tuesday, June 10th, 2008 07:52 pm (UTC)
Frankly I WOULD NOT CARE IF HE WERE MUSLIM! I almost said that, but self preservation kicked in.

And yeah, that is just... propaganda, and so clearly lies.
Tuesday, June 10th, 2008 07:57 pm (UTC)
Curiously, where do people get the idea of the fact that Obama is a SEKRIT MUSLIM?I mean just because his stepdad is Indonesian doesn't mean he's automatically Muslim. It's like saying all British people are stuffy uppercrust who drink tea everyday.

Frankly I WOULD NOT CARE IF HE WERE MUSLIM!
Yeah, really I thought America was all about embracing diversity.
Tuesday, June 10th, 2008 08:16 pm (UTC)
His name (can remember it it's first or sur) is both an arabic and african name. That's were all the muslin bs comes from.

HIS NAME.

o_O WHAAAAA????

I don't know whether I should laugh or headdesk
Tuesday, June 10th, 2008 11:41 pm (UTC)
Either reaction works.
