The Same Old Thing We Did Last Week

So, on the way down to Eugene, my phone broke, and I got a new one today. It's charging up, and I can't do anything with it at the mo, but holy mother of god do I need to download some ringtones, because the ones it came with are fucking atrocious.

And now, memage from [personal profile] meganbmoore:

Choose a fandom and I will tell you:

1. The character most likely to fall in love with the wrong person
2. The character whom I'm embarrassed to admit I adore
3. The character that would send me screaming in the opposite direction IRL despite being fascinating in fiction.
4. The character with the most annoying personality quirks
5. The character I most admire and why
6. The character with the worst temper
7. The character most likely to fail at everything
8. The pairings I prefer in canon
9. The pairings I prefer in fanon
10. The character with the most personal growth in canon

Nobody on that show had good luck with relationships. But Logan in particular, I think.

2. The character whom I'm embarrassed to admit I adore

I'm not embarrassed to admit I adore Max, but apparently that sets me apart from everyone else ever.

3. The character that would send me screaming in the opposite direction IRL despite being fascinating in fiction.

Sketchy. He amused me on the show, in real life, I'd loath him utterly.

4. The character with the most annoying personality quirks

Sketchy. And while I like him, sometimes Joshua.

5. The character I most admire and why
I have a lot of respect for Logan, because of his sense of right and how he has so many reasons to shut his eyes a just a have a nice, comfortably life, and no matter what he just keeps fighting the good fight.

6. The character with the worst temper

Max.

7. The character most likely to fail at everything

Alec has his hapless moments.

8. The pairings I prefer in canon
Max/Logan.

9. The pairings I prefer in fanon

Max/Alec.

10. The character with the most personal growth in canon

Max. She has the classic cynic becoming a hero, and I don't think she gets too softened in the journey.

I think Zack kinda wins the "bad relationship choices" award. Alec might get runner up for chasing Asha off with his angst, and his first love. I found that, except for Cindy, all of Max's coworkers were people who I'd dislike in RL, but are fun on the show. (Cindy was much wonderfulness.)

Yeah, we're supposed to just tolerate Max because Alec and Logan are hot. Which, you know, they are. I'll really never understand why people are borderline scared of female characters in important roles, much less driving the plot.

That's true, Zack does really take the prize.

And OC is totally made of win.

I'll really never understand why people are borderline scared of female characters in important roles, much less driving the plot.

Neither will I. I remember reading the fanfic of a girl who wrote long, plotty Alec/Max that I loved, and than I realized that she honest to god didn't like Max, but wrote well enough and in character enough that it took me a long time to notice. And then I stopped read it, because I couldn't understand who someone could spend so much time on a character they didn't like, or how they could ship Alec/Max when they didn't like one half of the pairing. (I'm sure Alec only wasn't doing Logan because she seemed to dislike him as well. God only knows how she made it through the first season.)

I freely admit that Alec is my favorite character(though, in all honesty, if I started watching the show for the first time now, I'm not sure I'd still like him, as I've grown extremely critical of the character type due to over exposure) but yeah, if you don't like Max and/or Logan, there's really no point in watching the show.

I've seen a LOT of the "this is my OTP, even though I don't like her" (I...I admit I'm kinda guilty of the opposite, except it tends to be "I probably wouldn't like him if he weren't so hung up on her," if you know what I mean...kind of like how I can't help but slightly like McKay in SGA when his crush on Sam shows up, or when he's being protective of Elizabeth) from people, often from people who slam slash fans for being jealous of female characters, when they just seem to be jealous of them themselves.

See, I think 'if he didn't have this one character trait I wouldn't like him' is a much more reasonable response than 'I don't like him/her but I ship this relationship anyway,' you know?

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Very often, it is one trait that determines whether or a character is liked, or even loved.
