Title: Welcome Back
Author: redbrunja
Fandom: Naruto
Rating: PG-13
Author's Note: Okay, this was going to be for naruto_contest. Prompt, "converge". However, it's way over the word limit and I couldn't think of anything I wanted to cut.
Characters: Gaara
Summary: "There was not an infant in Sand to whom Gaara would curse as he had been."

From the moment the idea was first broached, there was never any question that it would be Gaara.

Eight demons chained to one rock - it was to dangerous a situation for any nation to just let stand, so at the summit of the kages, the question was not 'what to be done' but how many go to each village.'

Mizukage implacably 'requested' the six tailed beast that had traditionally belonged to Water.

Tsuchikage acted above the whole question and had her attaches argue for the demons that had generations ago belonged to Stone.

The Raikage was a greedy bastard - not content with the two who had been ripped out of his shinobi, he wanted more.

The Hokage grimaced in distaste and argued that as one of the few Hidden Villages that had shown they could control jinchuuriki, they should go to Leaf.

The Kazenkage said nothing, not even commenting when he killed the "kage" from Sound who had been let in on sufferance until the girl sneeringly informed the group that she was be taking Shakaku. Shortly after that, her blood had been sprayed across the conference table.

("I thought you were phobic about blood," the Tsuchikage snarled at Tsunade, clearly trying to salvage his pride after he yelped like a wounded coyote when the blood had hit him.

The Hokage lifted her hand from where it had been cupped over her saucer of sake, protecting it from the splatters, and took a nonchalant side.

"I got over it," she said, ignoring the droplets of blood dripping down her face.)

There was never any question about where Shakaku would go.

Shakaku belonged to Sand and there was not an infant in Sand to whom Gaara would curse as he had been.

"Trying this will most likely kill you," Temari informed him as her ordered her to stay behind, ready to lead the shinobi that would kill the ox demon if this failed, ready to lead Sand if he was dead.

"Hmm," said Gaara.

Temari swore at him.

And now he knelt in between the hands where he had died. Signs of binding and control were written in blooding lead from him up the statue, to where Naruto's precious medic was just putting the finishing touches on the ring of symbols around the eye.

"Ready?" she asked after a moment.

Kankarou squeezed his shoulder and stepped back.

Sakura took a small breath, loud in the quiet, and punched out the eye, glass shattering and chakra blazing around her fist. Then Shakaku was there, roaring into his head, screaming, screaming, screaming, and the sands rose around Gaara, lashed about knocking Sakura into the statue and Kankarou into the back wall and Gaara gritted his teeth as every violent thought and every homicidal desire of his demon crashed together like waves and redoubled themselves.

For one glorious, pure moment, all Gaara wanted was the kill, wanted blood in his mouth and screams in his ears, and Sakura would beg so perfectly when she was bowed before him as he flayed her silky skin from her bones, and Kankarou's blood (so close, so very close to his own) would be the sweetest of all.

Gaara forced Shakaku down.

Oh. You again, the thing in his head commented. The weak one.

Kankarou peeled himself away from the wall, the sand against his back protecting him from the sharp rocks.

Sakura lifted her head, recumbent on the carpet of sand that had risen to prevent her from falling.

Gaara smiled, his lips pulling back awkwardly.

WEAK! Shakaku screamed.

Kankarou bumped his shoulder affectionately as they left, and Sakura come up to him and said, voice delightfully soft, "Thank You."

Gaara could feel his weakness like a spot of warm decay behind his ribs, somehow more stable proof of his existence that the blood that infused the sands at his feet.

Gaara is awesome. I have my moments where I forget that, and then I read his backstory again, and I'm like, 'oh, damn, this boy is just...'

Thank you! That bit with Tsunade was actually added after I posted. I was trying to keep it under 300 word (total fail) but after I posted I was like, no, that bit with Tsunade needs to be there.

Yeah, I thought of trying to keep the word count down, or trying to post a butchered version on [livejournal.com profile] naruto_contest, but decided against it.

Beautiful stuff. If it had been a free-write for 'converge' you would have one hands down. :)
