When talking about TVD, I mentioned that an underwhelming TVD episode is close to peak of my tv-watching week. Well, it's unequivocally the peak when this is the competition.

Mechanical Approaches To The Bechdel Test

This was a fabulous read. I really think the author tackles having more positive representations of women in a very unique and meaningful way from a pov that isn't often represented in fandom. I found [livejournal.com profile] hradzka 's comments on why some texts fail the bechdel test from a technical, storytelling perspective to verbalize several things I've known instinctively and I like his discussion on stock roles and how that feeds into the male-dominated storytelling atmosphere. (Fair warning: the first spate of comments are not worth reading and get bogged down in missing the forest for the trees with regards to the Bechdel Test.)

It reminds me of an article I read on The Big Bang Theory talking about Penny and how developing her character from merely the object of the Male Gaze (both the main characters' and the audience's) wasn't just progressive: it was better television. (Sadly, I don't have a link for that one.)
