I have seen pics. "Mom was a babe, and looks kinda like Jo."
Which, even though I've lost interest in the show, I can now use as fuel in my "actually, Jo is Dean and Sam's half sister" theory. (Or cousin! Or something that can allow Jo and Ellen to return in a way that that doesn't set off the "OMG NO DON'T MAKE HER A LOVE INTEREST!!!" screeching.)
I didn't think of that, but you're right. And she also looks like Jess. I could easily see it. (And honestly, I would not mind Jo as a love interest at all. But them I don't hate women, so...)
As shipping is secondary to me outside of things where it's the point, I don't care if she's a love interest or not. I'm all for it with either brother, if in different ways, but that would just be a shipping bonus on top of her return.
She's just awesome. Had things gone in a different direction, with John interrupting the ritual instead of Mary, I figure the boys would have ended up going down a similar path . . . though somewhat more well-adjusted, since Mary would have preestablished contacts and know what she was doing, thus leaving more time to spend with the kids.
Seriously, John left them alone on Christmas. Possibly he could show a little less dedication to the job.
And while Dean has always been sexy, Sam was previously the one I'd feel more like giving a big hug to. Now it's hugging Dean and smacking Sam upside the head.
Oh, and on a non-fictional note, Katey (http://www.youtube.com/user/kateysfirearmsfacts) kicks ten kinds of butt. She was at a gun show with her father when she was twelve, and the cops came to arrest him for criticizing the numerous flaws in the Canadian gun registry. A neighbour stepped in to comfort her, helped to call her mother . . . and the cops arrested her mother, too, when she arrived. The cops then seized all the firearms in their home (her father makes and repairs guns; this destroyed his income) and then seized their home so they couldn't afford to defend themselves. But she's fighting back over youtube, and she's armed and snarky.

Yeah, that was just not on. A lot of John's parenting was Not On. And I really think Mary would have done better, if only because she KNOWS what it's like to be raised as a hunter, and would both a.) try to balance it with real life and b.) be okay with her kids not following in her path.
And oh my god Katey is AMAZING. That girl is doing good things and will do more.
If you tell your son you're proud of him and his immediate response is "AGH! YOU'RE POSSESSED BY A DEMON!" . . . and he's right . . . then there's something clearly wrong with your parenting technique.
Mary could do better, if only from the sheer force of will we see her exhibiting in wanting to raise her kids right. She'd still go on the mission to kill him, because the appearance of Yellow Eyes would tell her that, no matter what she wants, she can't escape the life and leaving the boys elsewhere would put them more at risk. But she'd know what she was doing, and probably have a stash of guns and silver knives in the closet.
She'd come to Sam's soccer games, give Dean lots of hugs, and make sure both boys knew how to use a gun -- and how to tell when you should (demon) and shouldn't (sheriff investigating noise complaint) fire. This episode means that somewhere in this great big cracked-out fandom, there's going to be one kickass AU in the works.
If there's ever a zombie plague, I'm heading to the compound that Katey's running.

Thinking about it, saying that Mary would have done a better job at being a parent than John is somewhat insulting. I think that a pack of wolves could've done a better job of raising them. Sure, there'd be a drop in language skills, but they'd still raise the kids well.
Well, I guess it depends on the wolves. And 'good' is really dependant on your definition of it, since credit card fraud and fake IDs are the norm for their day-to-day routine.
True. However, Dean seems to have protect the innocent branded into his bones, and despite his playboy ways, in most seasons he seems to honestly like and respect the women he interacts with. Also, he just seems like a decent guy, you know? And he's aware that the stealing and the lying are not a positive (and they're also nessecary - I can't really think of a way to get access to the things they need to, or make money while living a hunting life.)

Also: Sam used to be my woobie of choice, but more and more Dean's the one I feel like cuddling.

Dean has always been the one I feel like sexin'. ...I mean cuddling. I'd cuddle, baby, after, I promise. *wicked grin*

I'd guess that there are several in the works.
