Is it just me, or does Dan
have no reason at all to be mad at Serena? I mean, he wasn't dating her, wasn't even friendly with her when he slept with Blair's boyfriend, and cares about none of the people who really got hurt.
I understand him being a little upset and disillusioned but dude, chill.

This. This is exactly the case with me too, because Dan- compared to Nate and Chuck, is an angel! A romantic, funny guy that came from the other side that you can't help to root for. And he dates a girl without seemingly trying to get in her pants!

At least Chuck knows he's a A-level bastard (and everyone expects him to be that way) but Dan. Oh, Dan. This is the case where I really want to defend the guy, but since I'm already on ep 17 S2, I can't.
He's the perfect example of The Nice Guy that kills you inside.

Chuck's a bastard and I don't particularly like him, but he is entertaining, and has an interesting dynamic with most of the cast.
In general, though, the female characters are pretty superior to the males, with the possible exceptions of Rufus and Erik. Rufus gives me hope that Dan will outgrow it once he matures a bit.
And while I'm somewhat-unwillingly on the Blair/Chuck boat (I went from it being one of my main interests before starting to not wanting it after the pilot to a reluctant but eager fan...) the overwhelming levels of lesyay make me giddy.

I do give Dan credit for never even thinking that he can come before Blair when it come to Serena. He knows that he's permanently in second place there.
If Dan ever makes her choose between them, he'll come away very very sad. If he and Serena have kids, Blair will probably get to hold them first. And I love how he and Blair tolerate each other because the other is a necessary evil that comes ith their precious Serena. Though I'm convinced that Blair disinfects Serena every time she knows Serena's been around Dan.

I also love the mutual understanding between Dan and Blair- they both love Serena, and both realize that in order to make Serena happy, they have to tolerate each other.
But Dan will have his moments- he loves Serena, loves her so much as this perfect, reforming girl from Upper East Side that he puts her on a pedestal, because she, unlike Blair/Chuck/Nate, is good, according to him.
That belief, is the start of his downfall.

Honestly, most of the conflict in Dan and Serena's roundabout relationship makes little sense to me. They have arguments about things that have absolutely no importance. But don't worry - I don't think it's so frustrating in season 1, it's season 2 where they really start going in circles.

Actually, I had a question about the Gossip Girl series - what pov are they written in? 1st, 3d, do the books jump around from character to character, what?

They're typically written in the third person with the occasional two page interlude every four or five chapters or so showing updates on Gossip Girl's website where she writes in the first person since it's her blog. Each chapter follows one character's plotline and the main characters are Blair, Serena, Nate, Dan and Vanessa with the occasional foray into Jenny's doings - until she got her spin off, that is.
The series following the original set of characters is complete now that they've graduated high school but the author, Cecily Von Ziegesar continued the series with a new set of characters - the new one's called Gossip Girl: The Carlyles. However these books are written by a ghostwriter and the tone's changed as a result - the new ones have more morality and a bit more depth to them. I read the first one and I got the second but I'm not sure if I'll continue - the new characters don't appeal to me and it just isn't as entertaining anymore.

Well, with Book!Dan, he's ridiculously weird and judgemental about sex, almost to the point where he has a "women are either pure virgins or total whores" mindset. So, things like that offend them. TV!Dan is less extreme about things like that than Book!Dan though, as far as I know.
