Naruto & Bleach

So, this week's Naruto was quite fun, actually, although I could have done with less of Konan's 'you mustn'ts!' I'm really, really looking forward to seeing what Minato has to say (and he was quite the hottie, wasn't he?) Also, I loved how close Naruto came to doing the exact same thing that Nagato did and releasing the Nine Tails.

Also, did anyone else go, 'wow, Naruto is having the exact thing happen to him that happened to Kakashi ten chapters ago!' I'm almost afraid to say it in case Kishimoto decides to spite me just because, but.... it would be so incredibly lame if Kakashi is dead. Also, since I finally figured out the plot of my summer of weddings Sakura/Kakashi fic, I would really, really like to write something that's multi-chapter and not AU, just this once.

On the subject of Bleach: In the viciously perfect word of Sanzo, "I can't even care enough to care." Call me when the characters I actually recognize show up.

if Kakashi dies (the possibility of which I'm still in furious denial of and believe he will be rescued from limbo by Sakura's healing hands) it would be unbelievable and upsetting. and as I've said so many times before, if he dies, I'm totally done with the manga.

Since I don't have another big-fandom weekly fix that I actually enjoy, I'll stick around if Kakashi dies (especially since it's looking like we'll have some Sai action soon). That said, it would make no sense and be incredibly lame storytelling.

Gah, this week's chapter of Bleach frustrated me SO MUCH because it was building up to this awesome Orihime-sees-her-besties-in-trouble-and-decides-to-whoop-ass moment and then we see that Ichigo is undergoing a Magical Girl Transformation so THAT'S obviously not going to happen >.<

At least Ishida ran around like a jedi. That was pretty cool.

Ishida is usually a sole spot of coolness amoung massive amounts of fail.

And yeah, Orihime is getting negative character development at this point. Not just not changing; she's actually almost unrecognizable as who who introduced at the beginning of the manga.

I'm guessing it's something like a bit of his soul/a construct Minato made - I don't think Kishimoto is cruel enough to have this image of his father being a fake or somehow a trick.

I just wrote this huuuuge, loooong rant about the character assassination of Orihime, so I won't get into it here. But I will say this:

Fuck. You. Kubo.

Fuck you hard and rough and without any enjoyment whatsoever.

On the other hand... Kishimoto is at least deserving of some lube this week. I haven't been this happy with a Naruto update in a loooooong time. Actually, the last three or four chapters have been very, VERY good. Uncommonly so. Makes me wonder when Kishimoto's gonna go, "*snort* Had y'all fooled that I actually knew how to write! HAHAHAHA! *kills Kakashi*"

The one thing I'd been waiting for since Naruto showed up in drag-- er, in that super awesome sage mode gear-- with his frog army in tow was for him to be stripped down from and brought literally or figuratively to his knees. I got my knee-ing in both senses. And it was a beautiful thing to see because it made me actually care about Naruto (the character, not the series) again. To see him come in going, "YAY! RAWR! BADAZZ! SMASH!" was annoying to say the least. To have Pain beat him down and leave him questioning himself and almost without hope... it was a very touching moment and it was a MUCH needed developement for his character. It was lovely to see him as a 15/16 year old kid wondering what the hell he was gonna do rather than a cocky little one-trick pony.

I know! I am really enjoying Naruto lately, and I was pleased to see Naruto almost give up - I thought that was incredibly realistic and I really hope we see some effects from that.

Like, I'm praying that Pain doesn't get beaten this round, but gets driven off to lick his wounds, while Naruto does the same.

Yes! Exactly! That one moment of absolute weakness from Naruto was what was desperately needed in his character. That one grounding moment was perfect.

As much as that would be awesome story telling, I don't think it'll happen. Kishimoto doesn't usually let his bad guys escape in the middle of a fight. So... I'm expecting Pain to die within the next 2-3 chapters, barring any interference from Sasuke or Madara. Though it'd be sweet if Konan put her foot down and said, "No. We're done here. Pack your toys and let's go."

What I'm actually thinking might happen is naruto harnesses the nine-tails power and adds that to his sage mode stuff and becomes Uber-Super-Awesome-Ninja. It would fit with Kishi's theme of unwarranted power ups perfectly.

That would be awesome. And give Konan some nice agency, which I think she needs at this point.
