Excepts from the Iowa Supreme Court's decision to legalize gay marriage with commentary/subtext provided by [livejournal.com profile] mjules . In which Justice Caty is smart and snarky and totally pwns the flimsy basis on which marriage is denied gays.

Read it.

Seriously, this is one of those things that are so awesome I end up having to stop reading to prevent myself from exploding from the awesome.

Subtext: It's not like they're gonna be raising your kids anyway, so keep your noses out of it.

Hahaha, so much love for this. <3

Makes me think of one of the arguments I heard for prop 8 in California during the last election. "If it doesn't pass they will teach your children about gays in school! OH NOES!" Which was not only ridiculous because it was completely untrue... But also.. Why not teach kids about that early on? I learned about gayness from teh internets and was brought up not to discriminate so I've always been fine with teh hawt gayness. I remember my peers in middle school believing that being gay was something weird, different and/or wrong though because they just plain didn't understand what it was to begin with.

I think we should be teaching children about gays, alternative lifestyles, as well as comprehensive birth control.

Not all at once and not when they're young, but as my mom said, 'by the time they ask questions, they should know the words for the body parts' (i.e. vagina and penis) and I can't believe it would screw up a kid to hear at around the same time, 'some families are like yours and have a mommy and a daddy, and some families have just a daddy, and some have just a mommy, and some have two daddies or two mommies.'

Yep, I agree. And also on it being a gradual thing, most definitely. We don't need to force information on children too soon but talking about alternative lifestyles should go hand in hand with sex ed classes. We started having sex ed when I was in 4th grade -- they were tame and just vaguely explained what changes we were starting to see. I was lucky though because my district at least taught us that stuff from 4th-10th grade and did it in an honest way (none of that abstinence only sex ed bull shit for us!).

Same. I have fairly tame classes in elementary school/middle school (which is as it should be) and when I was older, my mom put me in the unitarian universalitst sex ed program, which was a bit more through.

Undeniably my favorite part...

"Our constitution does not permit any branch of government to resolve these types of religious debates and entrusts to courts the task of ensuring government avoids them."

*cheers* That is just such an epic win.
