Well, Fuck

Remix sign ups are open but I haven't written fics in ANY of the qualifying fandoms and certainly not the required amount. I could have sworn that both Avatar and Naruto were on the list, but I guess not.

Goddamn.

I signed up, and I haven't written enough (or at all) in any of the qualifying fandoms. I just put my choices in the "Other" slot. still not sure if that'll get me in, but I figured it was worth a shot, so I don't see why you can't, either.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-05-31 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, the whole point of the qualifying fandom was that you needed to have written a certain amount in at least one.

Let me know if it works out for you though.

[identity profile] tobu-ishi.livejournal.com 2009-05-31 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I left a (fairly) polite comment to the post, asking why the list overrepresents Western media and hardly mentions Japanese and if this could be remedied, and am totally going to do the "Other" option while I'm at it. This is BS.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-05-31 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Didn't they have more options last year? Because I swear I checked the requirements for the previous year and both Naruto and Avatar were there.

Please let me know what you hear back, because if something changes, I'd like to know.

[identity profile] mewsrissicat.livejournal.com 2009-05-31 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
From what you and your friends are saying, I'd guess that the people running the Remix has definite *personal* preferences and may be using it to feed his/her habit. (This may also be incidental and unconscious, I should point out here. It could also be the person(s) involved are not familiar with many of the more popular non-western fandoms, and thus are less likely to remember to include them.

(Because, I'm sorry, but Naruto and Avatar are too big that they've never heard of them unless there's not an interest there at all.)

[identity profile] birdsarecalling.livejournal.com 2009-05-31 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I find it bizarre that they've excluded fandoms like Naruto and Avatar, but have included elderly anime fandoms like Weiss Kreuz which aren't nearly as active. Maybe the people who run this thing are clueless about the cartoony side of fandom.

It's a shame. I was thinking of signing up to remix an Avatar fic, for nostalgia's sake.

[identity profile] tobu-ishi.livejournal.com 2009-06-01 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe add your voice? If they get several (polite) comments to that effect, they might consider adjusting things while the signup is still in its early stages, y'know?

[identity profile] tobu-ishi.livejournal.com 2009-06-01 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
*grins* Spamming up poor Red's journal here, but consider posting a polite comment to the signup entry? If enough writers go HI WE'D LOVE TO DO THIS BUT, and mention the same fandoms, they'd be a bit daft not to add a fandom or two. After all, the point of the qualifying fandoms is to make sure you can find other authors in at least one common fandom, isn't it? :)

[identity profile] tobu-ishi.livejournal.com 2009-06-01 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I got a reply (http://community.livejournal.com/remixredux09/698.html?thread=4026), if you can call it that. It occurred to me to see if we could get six Avatar writers to comment, which is plenty enough to add a category by their own admission, but "we can't alter the form now" hits my Pointlessly Obstinate Alert buttons.

I do wonder, though. Would we get smacked around if we asked about creating a satellite LJ comm? HEY GUYS SIGN UP HERE IF YOU WANT TO DO THIS IN AN ANIME FANDOM, SEE THE RULES ON THE MAIN SITE. We could keep the signups and results on it, so as not to bother the "real" participants, and maybe drop the coordinators a link afterwards.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-06-01 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I did. And yeah, I really wished they'd talked about this on their com, because I KNOW that if there had been even one post on chuunin.... more than two people would have offered to participate.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-06-01 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I was actually thinking about doing something like that. And it can't hurt to ask, or even just run an animated remix. There's ones for Supernatural and Harry Potter specifically, so I can't imagine they'd mind.

And yeah, I read that reply.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-06-01 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently Naruto didn't get enough people offering to write it last year and so was dropped from the qualifying fandoms list. (Only two people offered for it last year.)

What annoys me was that this was done without any warning before the sign ups went live, so apparently there is no way to change that now.

It's frustrating, because I know out 4-6 people on my flist alone who are interested in doing it, and I can't imagine how many would write for it after one post one chuunin or avatar_fans.

I definitely think there is some skewing going on with it occurring within a kind of core fan group that likes these certain fandoms, where people find out about it via word-of-mouth, so it's very insular.

I'm really disappointed that I don't get to play, though.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-06-01 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
*nods*

I definitely think there's some self-selecting going on - where it's not advertised anywhere, so it ends up not really reflecting the straight popularity on the fandoms as a whole, but the popularity of the fandoms within the group that already knows about remix.

*nods*

Yeah, it would have been awesome. I was really curious to see what someone else would do with my work.

[identity profile] tobu-ishi.livejournal.com 2009-06-01 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
I'd be up for it if you are. We could spam a quick signup ad around the major anime comms we frequent and see who bites?

[identity profile] tobu-ishi.livejournal.com 2009-06-01 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I left them a comment to that effect. This isn't Calvinball. If you're going to change the rules, warn the players. ._.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-06-01 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Can I just say that I love you for making a Calvin & Hobbes reference?

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-06-01 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
The thing is, it is finals week and I'm working full-time this summer, so I honestly can't say yes to anything else. I'll participate and be a sounding board, but would you be able to take point on this one?

Also, I would wait a couple of days just to see if the mods at remix, like, sleep on it and change their minds or decide to take a test of who would like to participate and consider adding it back. Just in case.

[identity profile] tobu-ishi.livejournal.com 2009-06-01 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Hah. It's one of my all-time favorite comic strips, from any country, and bless you for appreciating it too. XD

[identity profile] tobu-ishi.livejournal.com 2009-06-01 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'd appreciate at least one person to help (got any recs?) in case this balloons the way I think it has a chance of doing...but I think I could take point. I'm only playing two or three active characters in any RPs at the moment, and work is pretty slow in June. ^^

Waiting a few days seems like a good plan, though I'd like to piggyback this on the actual Redux as much as possible. For one thing, to save effort, because I am a lazy little creature. For another thing, we've rather got something to prove.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-06-01 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Only a wee bit. ^_^

And would you like to me make a post asking who on my flist would be interested in helping you mod? Off hand, I know [livejournal.com profile] otaku_revey is interested (and doing remix) and [livejournal.com profile] fonsetorigo seemed interested the last time I talked about remix.

[identity profile] tobu-ishi.livejournal.com 2009-06-01 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
That would be completely awesome. ♥ You know more hardcore ficcers than I do, anymore.

[identity profile] mewsrissicat.livejournal.com 2009-06-01 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they could have communicated better, without a doubt. Hopefully, they don't compound it with obstinacy.

And in your shoes, I'd be disappointed, too.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-06-01 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Done!

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-06-01 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
They really could have.

And I really am! I wasn't able to participate last year because of timing/fandom, and then I checked and made double sure I had enough fics to qualify, and then it looked like it wasn't going to happen... and then the only sandbox I could play in got dropped.

I'm totally bummed.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-06-04 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Calvin and Hobbes is probably one of the top five most influential media of my entire life.
