So, my mom and I are giving Gargoyles a rewatch. It's almost as good as Avatar in the made-for-children, good-enough-for-adults way and I remember an insane amount of detail from when I first watched it at eight. Like, I remember specific scenes in great detail. It's really fun watching it with my mother, who has quite the eye for little details. "Why doesn't he just through that guy off the castle? Why do all the bad guys keep missing when they shoot?" Me: "Children's cartoon mom, children's cartoon.

Also, from this week's [livejournal.com profile] fannish5 :

Name your favorite character's five favorite books.

I picked Hatake Kakashi, because he was the easiest of my favorite characters to come up with favorite books for. I would do Sumire, but I don't know enough of Japanese literature and pop culture to do her justice.

5.) Lady Chatterley's Lover by DH Lawrence

4.) The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien

3.) That really good book about the Vietnam triage nurse that I read at least five times but can't remember the exact title and amazon is being unhelpful.

2.) Agnes and the Hitman by Jennifer Crusie

1.) Icha Icha Tactics by Jiriaya

Dishonorable mention: Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. This was the most terrifying book Kakashi has ever read and made him beyond grateful that Sasuke never loved Sakura back, that Sakura went to the Fifth for training and that none of them lived in Rain country.

That last bit, about Twilight was SO funny (and sadly true). God I shudder to think of Twilight done Naruto Style....

Honestly, I don't think it would be that different.

This. Epic internets to you. >:3

ROFL @ THE TWILIGHT THING.

Hee!

I loved Gargoyles. it was an awesome show, and it actually got me into Shakespeare once I was old enough to start getting the references. it's a shame I can never find it on anymore because it's been about six years since I last caught an episode. :(

and a random note; I loved The Things They Carried, even though it was a book assigned in an English class and I normally hated books high school made me read. XD
Friday, July 3rd, 2009 04:39 am (UTC)
You know, the older I got, either a.) teacher started assigning cooler stuff or b.) I developed a taste for Literature. I think it was option A.
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 12:11 pm (UTC)
Noooo...

You honestly think Kakashi would read Twilight?

*splutters*

It'd actually be funny to see him walking around with it muttering, "This is crap... whaaah? More sparkles? Son of a... oh, is this a sex scene-- oh. No. It's not. GODDAMN YOU, FADE TO BLACK CUT AWAYS!"
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 03:22 pm (UTC)
Exactly. And Anko would be like, 'if it sucks that much, stop reading! And stop hogging the conversation at alcoholic teatime! Kurenai and I want to talk about our lack of love lives.'
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 07:28 pm (UTC)
To which he'd gladly stop reading and give them some lovin. At the same time. Because, you know, he's the Copy Ninja. And the Copy Ninja is good at multitasking.
Saturday, July 4th, 2009 02:31 pm (UTC)
Or, struck by the image of Yamato and Iruka chasing him across Konoha full of murderous rage, cornering him in front of Sakura, who looks at him with disappointment and heartbreak, Kakashi decides to hide behind his porn while Kurenai and Anko discuss how horny they are.

And then go into the cafe bathroom together. For forty minutes.
Tuesday, July 7th, 2009 07:42 pm (UTC)
Hahaha... had I know we were doing THAT fanon, I would have given a different answer.

Forty minutes, huh? And when they emerge, Anko decides to go bully Iruka into inviting Kurenai and Yamato over while Kurenai casually mentions a very informal get together to Yamato as she's sexing his brains out.

And Kakashi is sleeping in the hallway of the apartment he and Sakura share. Because she said the couch is too good for him and there's no way he's getting in the same bed as her. And since he refuses to leave until they have a civilized talk (one that doesn't involve her trying to kill/castrate him or maim Icha Icha)... he gets the hallway.

Where he wakes up to Genma laughing his ass off at being kicked out of his own home.
Wednesday, July 8th, 2009 04:56 am (UTC)
Hahaha... had I know we were doing THAT fanon,

Yeah, with me, it's always that fanon. In my head? Kakashi is either with Sakura or his own hand and Jiriaya's brian.

And Kakashi is sleeping in the hallway of the apartment he and Sakura share. Because she said the couch is too good for him and there's no way he's getting in the same bed as her. LOLOLOLOLO. Oh, man, I'm with Genma on this one.
Wednesday, July 8th, 2009 01:18 pm (UTC)
Aaaah, gotcha. See, I'm okay with Kakashi being with Sakura, Yamato, Shizune or Kurenai and Anko... but in that order. If he's not with Sakura, he's making Yamato bite his pillow every night.

Me, too. But after a week of having to step OVER a sleeping copy ninja in the hallway (which is veeeery tricky to do when a little toasted) Genma finally conducts an intervention and forces them to sit down and talk. He explains, very calmly, to Sakura that obviously Kakashi was just kidding. He's too terrified of her to EVER seriously think of cheating on her. And he tells Kakashi, very sternly, that while it's perfectly naturally for both parties to give a stranger the occasional once over... you don't fucking say "well, there's an easy way to fix the problem of your horniness" with a straight face.

Kakashi then goes on to elaborate that what he meant by easy solution was for Kurenai and Anko to go home to their respective lovers and solve it THAT way, not that HE wanted to take them both on. He had enough trouble just keeping up with Sakura.
Friday, July 10th, 2009 07:10 am (UTC)
I'm like that with Sakura. If she's not with Kakashi, she'd nailing Sai or sexing up Anko or possibly fucked Deidara.

Oh, Genma, way to be an adult. ^_^

I'm still trying to wrap my head around DeiSaku a bit. Visually, a very, VERY pretty pairing. But other than cynchick's stuff, I've not seen any fic that's truly convincing for me.

For me, Sakura can be with: Kakashi, Sai, Yamato, Ino or Gaara for non crack relationshipst. I've been swayed through conversation and fic plotting by goldengrimoire on SasoSaku (which has some SERIOUS fuck uppery potential to it) and I'm still rather, "eh" when it comes to ItaSaku. It's not bad, but I don't actively seek out fic for them. If it's recc'd, then sure.

Well... Genma WAS one of the moderators for the chuunin exam. It'd make sense for him to moderate a spat between two friends... especially if it meant not having to come downstairs to find Kakashi shaving with a kunai and a mirror he stole from Sakura's compact. Because other than letting him in to get clothing and a few toiletries... Sakura does NOT want him in the apartment.

Read this, for Deidara/Sakura:

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3718684/1/Vessel

It's cuttingly in character for both Deidara and Sakura and is my canon for them. Bonus points? It is the one Atakuki captures Sakura for nefarious purposes that I think works.

As for Itachi/Sakura.... I used to have a 'I'll read it if it's there' attitude until I realized that not even authors I otherwise like write it in character.

Oh, it totally would. And I really like the idea of Kakashi having to shave with kunai in the hallway.

Ooo... thanks for the rec! Will read ASAP.

And to make it even worse for Kakashi... he doesn't have his wallet on him, so the only way he can do his laundry is if he "accidentally" tosses it in with Yamato's at the laundromat.
Wednesday, July 15th, 2009 12:03 am (UTC)
Ha, ha, ha! Oh, Kakashi. Although, seriously - you're a ninja. I'm sure he could find a way to get his wallet back. Unless Sakura was carrying it around with him. In which case, yeah, he's going to be mooching off Yamato a lot. Which is only fair, since it's Yamato's fault this happened in the first place.

If ONLY he had been tapping hot widow ass, Kurenai wouldn't be sexually frustrated and Sakura wouldn't be annoyed with me right now. Pass the laundry soap.

Also, please tell me what you think of the fic - if you like it, there is an awesome sequel as well.
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 12:18 pm (UTC)
Oh man, I totally loved Gargoyles as a kid!! Hudson was my favorite XD And I was totally into those campy villains that all had jungle cat themed suits or whatever XDDD

I really enjoy your books for Kakashi. A mix of somewhat romantic and literary PTSD...the Twilight one gave me shivers, because that is how SO many people in fandom write Sakura /twitches.
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 03:16 pm (UTC)
I was a sucker for Xanatos and Desdemona (?) myself.

I had a fun time thinking up the kind of books he'd enjoy reading.
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 12:23 pm (UTC)
LOL Twilight, though I don't get the Rain country reference. *only read a few pages*
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 03:11 pm (UTC)
Twilight is set is Forks, which is the rainest place in the US. The equivalent in Naruto-land would be the Rain country.
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 07:02 pm (UTC)
Ha ha, that's great.
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 12:52 pm (UTC)
Gargoyles is kickass.
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 03:09 pm (UTC)
Trufax.
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 01:11 pm (UTC)
I've actually been meaning to find Lady Chatterly's Lover... for some reason I get the feeling now that I shouldn't. o__O

Argh, Twilight. Just. No. We don't Kakashi's IQ to drop that drastically.
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 03:04 pm (UTC)
Well, I'd give it a try... it's one of those books I should read as well.
(deleted comment)
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 03:01 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I just started a rewatch of that show. And I can't remember the ending but I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy it more than Avatar's.

I'd have to bang my head against the concrete just to get the images out of my head

Who wouldn't?
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 02:14 pm (UTC)
Gargoyles is made of win. That is all.

Have you read Lady Chatterly's Lover? I read Women In Love, and loathed every misogynistic page of it. After that, I didn't want to read anything by that author. If the book doesn't have the same issue, I'll totally put it on my reading list.
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 02:49 pm (UTC)
You know, I haven't actually read Lady Chatterly's Lover. I know my mom did, (and read it "Too Young" to boot) so that is mainly what I'm basing that on. Plus, you know, the whole plotline.
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 02:31 pm (UTC)
I've been watching the Zeta Project lately. Same idea. ♥ Made for kids, good enough for all ages.
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 02:48 pm (UTC)
I've never heard of the Zeta project.
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 10:38 pm (UTC)
I hadn't, either! A slightly younger friend (by two or three years) introduced me to it, this fall, as a part of her childhood, but it's so very much in the style of the cartoons I grew up watching that it feels nostalgic even though I never specifically saw it. Highly peculiar.

But--yeah. It's a spinoff of Batman: The Animated Series, about a killer android that finds self-awareness and a conscience and becomes a pacifist on the run from the company that created it and are now convinced that they must destroy it (they didn't get the memo on the pacifist part)...and the blonde ball of snark and questionable morals who becomes its guide and guardian against a world it doesn't understand and she understands maybe a little too well.

The first thing Ro does when she realizes she has an all-powerful robot on her hands is get it to hack her a credit card and go on a dubiously legal shopping spree. On a kids' show. Notwithstanding the occasional telling bit of nineties cheese, I had to keep watching. XD

This is kind of mind-blowingly awesome.

Twilight reference FTW!

He would hate the fade to black scenes.

Incidentally, I'm writing my research paper on how the Twilight series idealizes an unhealthy relationship. I kind of wish I wrote my research paper on using the Chronicles of Narnia, because for my tentative bibliography I need 13 non electronic sources.

I'm lazy.
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 08:36 pm (UTC)
Just curious, but would the paper on Narnia also have been on unhealthy relationships, or something else?

PS I love your current paper idea, because it boggles my mind how much that series is adored, when it portrays such weirdness in relationships...
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 09:18 pm (UTC)
I didn't mean Narnia has unhealthy relationships. I've never actually read the series. It would just make my tentative bibliography a hell of a lot easier.

Now that I think about it, because I haven't read it, it would be harder in the long run. I have about one month to write it, and it'd be a lot harder to review 12/13 books rather than 4 books.
Saturday, July 4th, 2009 02:28 pm (UTC)
Thirteen electronic sources? That should be a piece of cake. Try mla or proquest data base.

So, no sympathy from me on that score.
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 07:02 pm (UTC)
I need 13 non electronic sources.

It doesn't seem to help that the major book reviews gave Twilight such glowing reviews.
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 09:22 pm (UTC)
Disapproving Twilight is to tweens what disapproving Oprah is to middle age women.

They will cut you.

I figure I get some psych books about stalking and emotional abuse and stuff and maybe a couple journals.
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 07:43 pm (UTC)
My fangirlish glee at Agnes and the Hitman being on that list I think can be excused by the fact that I just finished reading it (and, of course, loved it).

Those all make perfect sense and I love it. Especially the dishonorable mention! XD
Saturday, July 4th, 2009 02:32 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I was just rereading Agnes & The Hitman and thought to myself in the middle 'you know, Kakashi would LOVE this book.'
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 08:33 pm (UTC)
... And know I have to go back to watch Gargoyles just so I can get the Shakespeare references.

And Kakashi's horror at Twilight is so full of Win, in that twisted, sadist sort of way.
Sunday, July 5th, 2009 03:13 am (UTC)
Honestly, I haven't caught to many thus far.

And Kakashi's horror at Twilight is so full of Win, in that twisted, sadist sort of way.

Isn't it?
