As someone who was quite involved in the Southern Baptist Church from 11-years-old onwards, seeing this article made me quite unexpressably pleased. Part of why I detached myself from the church (among many reasons) was its very thinly-veiled chauvanism; my now-ex completely ate up the "wives, submit to your husbands" and "men make the decisions" ideas the church leaders spewed out, so you can imagine that he and I clashed quite often about this, and of course because he felt he was supposed to be the leader in our relationship, I was immediately wrong. /RAGE

I'm in that kind of "Huh?" state that comes from seeing a prominent, public icon of American culture and history do something that not only do I utterly agree with...but do so on principle alone, and "it" being a very controversial political opinion. About feminism.
There's a good amount of positive comments, but then there's the Bible quotes about a woman's place, quite a few "Great, he left the church, now leave the country forever, Jimmy!" remarks. You know, maybe I'm missing something here, but Carter has got to be the most unappreciated president of the last 50+ years. Was I absent that day in Social Studies when we were taught about all the evil Carter did? Or is all this hate just about he Iranian hostage crisis that TEH GLORIOUS REAGAN SAVED US FROM!!
I saw this article a few days ago. Jimmy Carter is just so cool.
But another thing I thought about in the article was when it said Nelson Mandela had started the Elders, and I was like: "...oh my god Mr. Mandela, you just continue to be so amazingly awesome and won't stop even though he's 90." He's had an amazingly hard life, and I think most people would say he deserves a break. But nope! He's still fighting for the rights of others.
I'll stop now, because I could go on and on about Mandela. He's one of my heroes.
And I am glad someone in the comments said that you shouldn't take the bible literally. Since that book was written about a 1,000 years ago and written by man, I couldn't agree more.
No true. It was written over 1,000 years ago by MANY DIFFERENT MEN (notice the plural) or HUNDREDS OF YEARS and reflects the changing standards of behavior even within the text itself.

Some days I wonder why I love Jimmy Carter so much.
This is not one of them.
