They're Coming To See & You're Running To Hide

Last night mom was watching one of those uber-depressing English crime drama (no one does grimy and gray like the English) and one of the actors had the exact same accent as Alan Rickman. My mom said that was the Eton, utter class accent - is it? Is that what you call Alan Rickman's voice (besides Teh Sex)?

ON A COMPLETELY UNRELATED NOTE I have been craving Snape fic since I watched HBP. Does anyone have any recs? I like gen, Snape/Lily and Snape/Hermione (I don't want to hear it, okay?)

If you run across any good genfic, be sure to pass it along!

(I've had the misfortune of never coming across a writer who could write Snape in a romance in a way I thought was in character for him. So I stick to genfic, which I used to have good success with.)

You might like Sweet Halcyon Haze (http://asylums.insanejournal.com/less_for_you/3069.html) though it is Severus/Lily. It could definitely follow canon and is bittersweet and well written. It isn't gen though so maybe Red should rec it too after she reads it just in case since I don't know you/your tastes.

Will do. I seem to remember that I have a couple in my ff.net memories.

I've had the misfortune of never coming across a writer who could write Snape in a romance in a way I thought was in character for him.

This is not surprising at all. It takes a very adept touch to do so.

[identity profile] iapetusneume.livejournal.com 2009-08-08 09:13 am (UTC)(link)
I'll have to take a look, then! ...I used to read so much HP fan fiction. Very little of it was romance, too.

I think my favorite sort were the ones where Snape and Harry were stuck in a situation where they had to rely on each other and there was a battle of wills. I'm not a fan of Snape/Harry romance, but I love them interacting.

...this is totally making me want to reread fic, too.

Also, I think part of the reason I'm not too fond of Snape in romance is that there's a lot of crap out there. Because if the general rule that 90% is crap and 10% is good, then it means that it's that much harder to find it in the HP fandom since it's so huge. Way too much stuff I've tried to read is OOC.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-08-11 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
I used to read so much HP fanfic too! That was the last time I would just got to the pit and check out what the latest fics were (is so scarred).

Honestly, I think some pairings and some set-ups bring all the crappy writers to the yard. Snape+romance being a prime example (not the least because it's fucking hard to do right).

So I imagine in the Snape genre it's probably 96% crap.

Five Moments of Doubt (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3675387/1/Five_Moments_of_Doubt) is a great genfic favorite of mine and, if you don't mind fic about Eileen Prince(-Snape), one for sorrow (http://lilith-morgana.livejournal.com/244459.html) is hertbreakingly beautiful (it was written before Deathly Harrows was released but it holds up fine to the later canon).

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-08-08 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, man, One for Sorrow is amazing. I've actually read the one before. Oh, poor Eileen.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-08-09 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
ohmygod Five Moments of Doubt.

*flails*

*flails harder*

Oh, Snape.

[identity profile] mistaria.livejournal.com 2009-08-08 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
::purrs:: I love AR's voice. And also Clive Owens. In his natural accent or when he's doing an American accent. Mmmm.

Also, serious <3s for SS/HG! I have tooooons I could rec you so tell me what you feel like. For now I'll leave you with an excellent little fic that is reminiscent of the Bronte sisters or Jane Austen (though it's presently unfinished) Miss Stewart Disposes (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5277537/1/). If you're looking for long fics I recommend In Annulo (http://thepetulantpoetess.com/viewstory.php?sid=1480) or Luring the Enchantress (http://thepetulantpoetess.com/viewstory.php?sid=212). Orrr... let's see. Anything by the person who wrote Miss Stewart. Accountable (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3245929/1/Accountable) was one I read more recently that had good Draco and preggers!Hermione. It is from Hermione's POV but I like the Snape in it.

OMFG, read A Good Day (http://thepetulantpoetess.com/viewstory.php?sid=6347) first! This fic is absolutely perfect angsty Snape!!!! ::flails::

Okay, if you need anymore recs let me know. :p

EDIT: Okay, and after A Good Day you should read, Sweet Halcyon Haze (http://asylums.insanejournal.com/less_for_you/3069.html) which is Snape/Lily and Snape remembering his childhood and his friendship with Lily. Very bitter sweet. I recommend all fic (and she loves Snape so most of it features him) by [livejournal.com profile] odogoddess.

I'm in the middle of Accountable right now and oh my god! I can't stop reading! I don't know whether I want her to get with Snape or Draco more (well, honestly, it's Draco, but I know that isn't going to happen).

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-08-31 10:01 am (UTC)(link)
...and I finally just finished Accountable. Note the timestamp. I am SO going to regret this tomorrow.

[identity profile] mistaria.livejournal.com 2009-08-31 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Hehe, yeah. I read it like that too the first time (I even read part of it while visiting a friend because I was so hooked -- although we were both on laptops so it worked). I really enjoy that fic and part of me rooted for Draco to get the girl too despite my SSHG heart. I really like the part where he discovers Snape is the father and then when he confronts him. The only thing I didn't really like when I first read it was the part at the end with the Weasley twins but it made more sense to me on the second reading.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-08-31 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I've done that with friends - sometimes it's really fun to be around people with whom you can be hanging out and doing different things at the same time.

I really like the part where he discovers Snape is the father and then when he confronts him. The only thing I didn't really like when I first read it was the part at the end with the Weasley twins but it made more sense to me on the second reading.

*nods* All the Draco and Snape interactions were excellent, and I liked the confrontation as well. One of the things that bugged me was Lupin's characterization, actually. I could tell the author didn't really like him, and while that was in-character for Snape, it wasn't so much for Hermione, with her pleasant experiences of him as a teacher and her respect for authority figures in general. I could tell the author wasn't a big fan of Ron, but a.) I like Ron less than Lupin in general so it bugged me less and b.) I think the type of story she was telling nessecitated him to be painted in a more flattering light than she needed to do with Lupin, if that makes sense.

[identity profile] mistaria.livejournal.com 2009-09-20 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
So I just reread it for probably the third time and I can't believe I didn't notice all the Lupin!hate the first couple times. Holy crap, the author is obviously not a fan! Even at the end McG is all, "Yeah, I'm going to replace him for no reason other than he is annoying." I understand the Snape annoyance but not the stuff coming from the Gryffindor characters.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-09-23 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I know! It was on the second reread that I caught McGonagall firing Lupin for being annoying.

I mean, I don't think the author likes Ron that much either, but she at least gives him a fair shake. She just hates hates hates on Lupin, even from characters it doesn't make sense from.

And Lupin was a really good DADA teacher, even if his emphasis wasn't on curses.

Pet Project (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2290003/1/Pet_Project) ยป by Caeria
Hermione overhears something she shouldn't concerning Professor Snape and decides that maybe the House-elves aren't the only ones in need of protection.
Harry Potter - Fiction Rated: M - English - Romance/General - Chapters: 38 - Words: 220,211 - Reviews: 4488 - Updated: 7-15-09 - Published: 3-3-05 - - Severus S./Hermione G.

This story is ridiculously good. It's a WIP, but I think you'd really, really enjoy it.

[identity profile] lightprincess89.livejournal.com 2009-08-08 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
Snape/Hermione (I don't want to hear it, okay?)

Nah. Snape/Hermion is pretty hot. I've read some great fanfic with the two of them. I don't know any ones off-hand, but I may have to go look for some again.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-08-08 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
I have too. It's one of those pairings that I never would have thought of on my own, but I found fantastic fic and there you have it.

[identity profile] jade-sabre-301.livejournal.com 2009-08-08 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure if you're a fanfic snob, or how much of one you are, so it is with only a slight hesitation I offer "Of Corridors and Moonlight," (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3319543/1/Of_Corridors_and_Moonlight), slight because there are a couple of things about it that I think should have been done differently. It's also a bit heavy on the angst in places, but then it's Snape/Lily.

"Painless" (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3413258/1/Painless) is a half-crack half-serious Snape/Lily fic.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-08-08 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
I'm only a snob when I'm reccing to other people or it's not a pairing I'm into.

I have read and enjoyed some serious trash because I needed an OTP fix.

[identity profile] inniyah.livejournal.com 2009-08-09 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I know of one... It's funny. If you like serious things, maybe you are not like it, but I thought it was really funny and original. The author is "opalish".

summary: The true story of how Harry and Ginny's kids got their names. Really, it's all Snape's fault. Crackfic oneshot.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-09-06 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
The real question is how they managed to have three children with Snape offering color commentary in the bedroom (you know he would).

[identity profile] inniyah.livejournal.com 2009-09-06 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh! In the fic he does... that's what makes it so damn funny :D

Ginny even gave Harry an ultimatum.

Hahahahaha red it, it's funny and but is more on the parody side...

[identity profile] onerottenpeach.livejournal.com 2009-08-09 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahaha I don't know why but I feel significantly less like a weirdo for liking Snape/Hermione knowing that you do too. I completely blame my original enjoyment of the pairing on all the great fic out there for them. HP fandom has way too many good writers.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-08-09 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here.

I was like, Snape/Hermione? Well, I like Snape and I like Hermione, I'll give that a shot.

And then it turns out a hell of a lot of epic writers like it too.

[identity profile] thebittergreen.livejournal.com 2009-08-10 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you read Heart over Mind, by Regann? I find it agreeable. I found it through the author of Pet Project's favorites. Pet Project is good, but the portrayal of Harry and Dumbledore irritate me. It's not so here.

The link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1215092/1/Heart_over_Mind

Yup. And also, I was wondering if you had the time, you could refer /me/ to some Snape/Hermione stories? I'm sure you have come across some that are more than worth reading.

If you're not busy, please PM me? :3 But otherwise, thank you anyway.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-08-11 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't read that fic yet. I'll be sure and check it out.

I'm actually in the process of tracking down one of my favorite Snape/Hermione stories - I didn't actually get it book marked (dumb girl).

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-09-10 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, now that I've had a chance to read through other people's recs and find my own, I can give you a couple of my favorite Snape/Hermione fics.
