Okay!

Education, how should it be reformed?

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
First of all, I'm going to say straight up that I do not feel qualified to answer this. I don't think I know enough about the problems and how kids learn to be sure of my opinions. That said, I'm going to crib from my highschool/alternative program teacher, and say the first time I would do would be to make a high school degree a meaningful degree again, and realize that not ever child is going to go to college after HS, and give more support for trade schools.

[identity profile] qualapec.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
Word. And that's an angle I haven't considered. It's been a topic of thought lately and you're the first person who's mentioned that.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
Glad to give you some food for thought.

Female animanga tropes in characterization

(|D lolvague, sorry)

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
The majority of the them just straight-up suck. I'm sorry, but that is the unvarnished truth.

Admittedly, the good manga will give us legit action girls, but so often (what I've read of manga) is full of girls who are not quite as special as the boys (even FMA does this) and girls where love = weakness.

[identity profile] meitah.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I like this meme. *lifts* <3

Because asking about Naruto's misogyny would be like throwing dynamite into the barrel, I'll go with "female slash writers who hate women."

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
THEY PISS ME OFF SO FUCKING MUCH.

Like, I should feel sorry for them BUT I JUST HATE THEM TOO MUCH TO DO SO.

Seriously, all those people who say shit like 'but the boys are just more interesting' or, my personal favorite 'SLASH IS SEX BETWEEN EQUALS', it's like, what the fuck, ladies? Is teh cock really that magical? Do you really feel that dirty and defiled and unequal with your significant other? I should feel sorry for you that you apparently hate your gender and, by proxy, yourself so much, but mainly I just want to smack you around until you find some fucking self-respect.

[identity profile] meitah.livejournal.com 2009-12-09 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I know! I have no problem with girls who write slash and treat female characters fairly. I don't understand it, no matter how many times my slashficcer friend explains it to me, but I have no problem with it.

But I have to wonder if the "boys are just better" attitude from a girl isn't insecurity or self-loathing. And I'm with you on the smackdown plan. Would you prefer a baseball bat or a golf club?

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-12-13 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
But I have to wonder if the "boys are just better" attitude from a girl isn't insecurity or self-loathing.

IT BLATANTLY IS! I JUST HAS TO BE! BECAUSE IT IS SO DIFFERENT FROM REALITY THAT IS JUST HAS TO BE COMING DIRECTLY FROM THE MOST FUCKED PARTS OF THESE GIRLS' HEADS!

[identity profile] meitah.livejournal.com 2009-12-14 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
I'll take that to mean bare handed smackdowns.

But I still don't know where that comes from. As you said, it has no basis in reality and I can't think of an explanation.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-12-24 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
As you said, it has no basis in reality and I can't think of an explanation.

It has no basis is reality yet boys>girls is an idea that our culture is saturated in. Add in anime/manga as the lens through which these girls are communicating, which is even MORE blatant about the boys>girls subtext than Western Culture is, and it's not a shock the females who are susceptible to that message eat it up with a spoon.

Women who hate women being in power, women fighting for their rights, and being women in general. DDDDDD: (a.k.a. Ann Coulter)

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
:FFFFFFFFail.

There is nothing worse than a woman who has power and uses it to tear down other women. Okay, there are a lot of things worse, but it has a nice bitter edge of betrayal to it.

[identity profile] greynonentity.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I see most everyone picked up on the feminism/female/women/power bit that I was going to ask, so instead, how about race in fiction?

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Over the last year, this is something I have become exponentially more aware of.

Especially in a visual way, if that makes sense? Like, I have decided that the hero of just listen is half-asian, because the idea of a supertall asian dude paired with the tall, slender blonde heroine is very visually appealing to me.

Besides all the ethical reasons to have more diversity, it just makes it so much more appealing and easy to tell characters apart when they're not all white and blonde. Like on the first season of veronica mars, it got so confusing which blonde she used to date and which blonde she was going to date in the future, you know?

(I ship her with the hispanic character who actually gets her.)

[identity profile] nimblnymph.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
First, I like your new LJ quite a bit. It's pretty.

Second and more on topic ...

Overrated writers/books. And no, this is not geared toward Twilight. I've had/heard quite enough ranting about that, thank you.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, god, I totally know. It's like, shut up about it already.

I just finished The Blind Assassin, and while it was interesting in the beginning and the end, the middle is both hellishly long and boring. I expected a bit better from Margaret Atwood.

And I'm glad you like the new layout - I decided it was time for a change.

*stares*

When you get two seconds, you need to go look at the post I just made. Just look at the icon... and then come back and look at this.

Whoa. Random.

I'd actually been eying up "The Blind Assassin" in Borders the other day. On a scale of 1-10 (one being "I don't want my life back; I want you to finish me off" bad and ten being "This book was written by some form of superhuman deity" good) how would you rate it over all? is it worth purchasing or just read it at the store if I'm bored one day?

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
That is.

Ummmmm a five? Atwood is, technically, a very good writer, and there are parts of the book that are quite interesting.... but I'd advise you to read the beginning and the end in the bookstore, and not actually buy it.

Feminists who don't seem to know or care about the particular concerns of WOC.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Most of the time I think it's ignorence. They don't realize that despite all the people in question being women, there are some significant differences in represntation and behavoir.

I think rawles post on why Uhura's relationship with Spock is so empowering is a good example of the peculiar and limited reprenstations available for ladies of color.

That said, ignorence is not an excuse. You would think feminists would be MORE willing to listen to other women when they say 'hey, this is a problem,' instead of a silencing them, which I have heard happening over and over.

People who say shit like:

"I'm not homophobic but those gay people need to stop shoving their lifestyle in my face!"

Barnside target, I know. BUT I AM SO TIRED OF THIS and it will be cathartic.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
Any 'I'm not but' statement needs to be seriously examined. Because if you're really not whatever, why are you bothered by whatever is bothering you? And are you equally bother by the socially acceptable equivalent?

For example, if two guys kissing in front of you on the bus annoys you, would a guy and a girl kissing in front of you on the bus do the same?

In short: if you say "i'm not but" you probably really, really ARE.

Okay, this is specific and real world and infuriating, so I suggest you get yourself some good comfort food and something you can throw across the room without breaking, or something you don't mind breaking...

Roman fucking Polanski and his supporters. "It was thirty years ago!" "He's films are so good, he can't go to jail for rape!" "It was sex with a minor, not rape!" "She looked older than 13!" And all that other bullshit.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 08:31 am (UTC)(link)
Let's take this one at a time:

"It was thirty years ago!"

So fucking what? He did it. He raped a thirteen year old girl. He never paid for it. He left the country to avoid paying for it.

"He's films are so good, he can't go to jail for rape!"

Fuck you. Fuck you so hard. Do you have any idea what rape does to a person? How it affects them? How it damages them? How hard they have to struggle to be a survivor and not a victim?

I would slash the most priceless painting in the world to prevent a thirteen year old - ANY thirteen year old– from being raped. I would shatter Rodin's The Kiss to prevent a thirteen year old from being raped. I would burn Mozart's symphanies to prevent a thirteen year old from being raped.

Real people trump art.

And I am sure as hell not going to give Polanski a free pass because his movies are good. There is not a movie good enough in the entire world to wipe away the sin of raping a child.

"It was sex with a minor, not rape!"

First of all, it was rape. She was begging him to stop, he was shoving his penis into her. There is no way you can spin that to not be rape. You just can't.

Secondly, sex with a minor has this neat little legal term: statutory rape. If she had been crawling all over him and begging for him to fuck her (which she was not doing in any way shape or form) it still would be rape, because she was THIRTEEN. To quote wiki: "The laws presume coercion, because a minor or mentally challenged adult is legally incapable of giving consent to the act."

"She looked older than 13!"

So fucking what? She wasn't! She was thirteen! And let's say she does look older than thirteen - did she look legal? Did Polanski NO KNOW that she wasn't 18+? (He did.) Fuck you. It doesn't matter what she looked like or what she wore or if she did/didn't look 13. NOTHING ON THIS EARTH gives Polanski the right to force his penis inside her body. NOTHING.

Oh, they are not just defending him. They are actually pulling strings to get his sorry ass out of jail and into house arrest in Polanski's ski resort home.

In point: the French prime minister has actually helped Polanski's case from staying in prison to going to house arrest for a measly 4.5 million in US dollars in bail. All because his wife is an arteest in the upper French arteest comuunity and Polanski is an arteest and arteest stay together.

Okay, now I'm just popping out of nowhere. (random person yay!)

How about yaoi in general?

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-12-11 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yaoi is massively, massively, not my taste. I don't find the idea of two guys doing it sexy, so slash is something that I just don't read.

Secondly, there are a lot of negative tropes/issues that tend to be prevalent in yaoi - vilifying the women, having subtext that girls are icky, etc, are ones that DRIVE ME UP A FUCKING WALL.

[identity profile] trillionite.livejournal.com 2009-12-10 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
INTERESTING MEME.

How about... Obama?

Naruto?

Can I have more than two tries?

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-12-19 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
If you want, you can ask me about more things.

As for Naruto.... why must we spend so much time on characters I don't care about? Why don't the ladiez get cool fight scenes ever?

Obama: look, I am a HUGE supporter of Obama. I voted for him, I danced in the streets when he was elected... but he did NOT earn a Nobel peace prize. What has he done that makes him eligible for that? He has proved that, on occassion, the US' political system works but I don't think that that is equal to going to nepal and afganistian and building schools for girls.
