was excellent.
Okay, to be honest, I was expecting great action scenes and banter between Holmes and Watson and not much else. However, I was pleasantly surprised.
The movie does a fantastic job of getting into Holmes' head, and showing how chaotic and over-stimulating the world is - no wonder he's a morphine addict.
Secondly, I was thrilled with Irene Adler. I expected her to be merely eyecandy, but she was, in fact, a complex, clever character who was treated with respect by the film makers and script writers. I was actually sorry that the whole Irene-in-a-corset scene that played so very prominently in the trailer was completely absent. I also liked Mary - her love for Watson, how she was gentle but had a spine. She was clearly not threatened at all by Holmes and interested in Watson's work.
Watson also got an upgrade from the books as well as The Beekeeper's Apprentice; an active, interesting character in his own right, who clearly had his own strengths and could quite adeptly keep up with Holmes.
What I was less satisfied with was the length; I think the last forty-five minutes could have been tightened up.
Also, this was clearly a sequel-bait movie. I wish they had tied up more strings and only teased us with Moriarty, instead of having him clearly tugging strings in the background from the beginning. It made the movie feel both too long and unfinished, which is not good.
Finally, it was so difficult to catch a ton of dialogue early in the script. I want to want to rewatch a movie because it was awesome, not because I couldn't hear what they were saying.
