1. ) Opposites attract. (For more on what I mean when I say that, read Jennifer Crusie's essay 'What I Learned From TV.' Her site is down so I can't link at the moment. I ♥ you, Jennifer Crusie!)
I'm so glad that her post went on to explain that the fact that they ARE "opposites" means that the love affair is both hot... and likely to be doomed.
I do beg to differ on the POV that only doomed relationships are interesting. But I suppose that she means "interesting" in the sense of crane-your-neck-to-watch-that-traffic-accident interesting. New love is about desire and exploration and working out the rough spots - love that's settled into trust and a steady, warm glow isn't exactly eye-catching, even if it's what we all want.

I wouldn't say that only doomed relationships are interesting, but I would say that what makes a fictional relationship interesting is not what makes a real life relationship interesting.
*sigh*
I feel like I say that every single time opposites attract or enemy shipping or slap slap kiss comes up on my lj.
It's okay. I totally understand the impulse. I just think that, often (in Western Culture/American Culture especially) we don't assume that people understand the difference between reality and fantasy.
Witness so many Christian's flipping out over Harry Potter.
Ditto on liking that the opposites = hot but doomed. I never really watched Buffy but I did somehow end up seeing the "UH OH WE JUST HAD SEX AND CRAP WE'RE DOING IT AGAIN!" Buffy/Spike episode which was hilarious and hot. :D
Shipping doomed couples is too fun. Especially when "forbidden fruit" is involved.

Great post there. I can't say that everything I ship holds all those things in common, but I'm definitely a fan of everything that was listed.
