First of all, yes, I am planning on reading the novels.
On to the film:
Honestly, this movie is so well-done that I don't quite know what to say about it.
It's intense, suspenseful (when Mikel was shot at, I jumped), disturbing (full of sexual violence, abuse, and the photos of the dead women creeped me the hell out).
But walking out of the theatre, what really struck me is how the movie is about women refusing to be victims. Lisbet is damaged and because of that holds everyone accountable for their actions (I cheered when she let the villain burn). And even the missing girl who assumed murder drives the main plot of the novel turns out to have saved herself with her own smarts and the help of her (female) cousin.
All the actors in this are fabulous, btw.
The may/december romance is epic - so subtle it could not have been anything but a foreign film and so affecting because of it. The kiss in the prison (50 bucks says it was there first kiss ever) was incredibly touching and I loved how Mikel accepted who Lisbet was and did not push for details. Also, their personalities bounced fantastically off each other.
