Now, 85% of this episode was sheer awesome. But 15% made me seethe with rage. When Damon snapped Jeremy's neck, I had my hands up next to my face, my belly tight with the awesome of this show, knowing that I could not textually express my glee.... and then Jeremy had one of the motherfucking rings that the ladies NEVER, EVER get.

I am so disappointed. Caroline getting smothered was a vicious pouring of salt in my wound.

Other than that, I loved it.

Nina knocked this episode OUT OF THE GODDAMN PARK. I cannot get over how awesome her body language is as Katherine and how nicely she differentiates the two characters.

I am still not convinced that Katherine is here because of Stefan (I honestly hope not and seriously - it's been a century and a half, she can't have missed him that much). Everything with Katherine was awesome. Her sexing up Damon was hot as fucking hell and I totally felt for him when he was trying to ask her if she'd loved him... he sounded so young and lost. And when he confronted Elena... oh, that was harsh, even as I loved Elena not being at all wishy-washy about her feelings. And snapping Jeremy's neck was exactly what I'd expect Damon to do... I love it when he'd acting like a proper vampire, all violent and evil. Less when he was threatening Elena. I was having bad, bad, Buffy flashbacks.

On the subject of vampires, I may be developing a crush on Stefan. He was just so... I just wanted to cling to his shoulders. They're so ...broad and... manly. I really liked that he know right away that it was Katherine - that's my boy! It gave me warm fuzzies even as I adored the tension between him and Katherine.

Also, I'm digging Bonnie this season. For whatever reason, she's working for me this episode. Keep it up, Bennet, keep it up.

Not sure which flashbacks you're referring to but yes, I love when we got a shot of full vampire!Damon. I enjoy his humanized self but the reminder the core is always there is good.

She was insanely good. When she was Katherine-pretending-to-be-Elena I was staring at the screen through my fingers.

In Buffy there was a pretty graphic attempted rape that was both a.) out of character and b.) considering the subsequent arc for the attempted rapist and Buffy's own reaction, morally irresponsible, imho.

Agreed. I am so damn excited for this season.

Oh I know what you're referring to now. I wouldn't say the kiss is as bad as that scene, because Damon did back off, if only to go after Jeremy. If he'd kept pushing though, I would have had some serious questions/concerns, like you said.

Well they did say it's the year of the cat :) However cheesy that comes off.

Yeah, I handled this scene a lot better both because it didn't go as far as the one in Buffy, and Elena's reaction - which was 'he's evil' even if a portion of that was because of what he did to Jeremy.

Well they did say it's the year of the cat :) However cheesy that comes off.

Yeah, I snickered at that tagline but now I'm like, 'HELL, YES, YEAR OF THE KAT!'

Dude, *this.* I might have cried when I saw the ring, I WANT HIM DEAD SO MUCH. Sigh. And John. Why can't we have Anna and Pearl back instead?

The Caroline thing was tragic, but I suspect that she still has Damon's blood in her system? I mean...I would hate to stop watching when I'm this deeply in love with Katherine's utter awesomeness because they can't stop killing the girls.

I am shipping Katherine/Damon hard, as I had suspected I would. And yeah, I don't buy the being in love with Stefan as anything other than a way to push Damon's buttons. OMG, their masochism tango, SO HOT. <3

SAME HERE! OR FUCKING MAKE HIM INTO A VAMPIRE AND DO SOMETHING ACTUALLY INTERESTING WITH HIM.

The Caroline thing was tragic, but I suspect that she still has Damon's blood in her system?

...

I hadn't thought of that. That would be pretty damn awesome.

Agreed. I'm praying that either Damon (or possibly Elena) gets to stack her ass, though. After another season of her epic evilness, of course.

If you see the preview you'll know for sure about Caroline.

OH AGREED. It's infuriating.

I really hope that Katherine has some BIG PLAN of some sort. Or maybe she just got bored. I could believe that of her.

Stefan does have broad and manly shoulders! Hee!

I really, really hope that Katherine showed up because she's bored and/or found out about Elena and didn't like her playthings finding a new girlfriend. That makes the most sense to me.

I loved what that -- Stefan instantly recognizing Katherine -- said about the relationship between he and Elena. They really know each other. (I have to admit, I also loved Katherine casually dislocating his shoulder.)

I remember knowing, last season, that it was Katherine the minute she stepped up onto the porch. Nina played it beautifully -- this episode she's moving as an entire different person, but in the season finale she was playing Katherine-playing-Elena and it was fabulous because you could see how she was mimicking her mannerisms and the way she holds herself and getting it not -- quite -- right. Just enough to ring alarm bells. I don't think I even noticed that Elena doesn't hold herself perfectly straight until I compared her modern-teenager posture to Katherine's strict, erect poise.

Someone tried to ~school~ me today on how Damon totally wasn't forcing himself on Elena and I needed to ~learn the difference~. I went, 'uh, yeah, when she's saying 'stop' and 'no, no, no' and he ignores her until she brings another guy into the discussion, that's...forcing himself on her. When Jeremy interrupts them, she still has to fight to get free.

It will be really nice to see the cast condemning Damon for his actions again.

I WANTED JEREMY DEAD SO BAD. I WAS, LIKE, WELL CAN THE SLEEPING PILLS ACTUALLY KILL HIM

OH GREAT DAMON CAN

WAIT NO WHAT THE FUCK

Especially because Nina plays pain and angst beautifully. So it would be an opportunity to both flex her acting skills and get rid of the creepiest creeping creeper that ever creeped!

And the thing is that the way she's played, I can kind of buy Katherine coming back for Stefan. Not in the sense of pining after him for a hundred years, but she's so whimsical -- I can kind of see her, as someone whose lifetime spans centuries, dropping and picking up her toys as whimsy struck her without paying much attention to the amount of time in between. I can see her being reminded by whatever reports she was getting -- from Isobel, whoever -- and remembering she'd had fun the last time around. And maybe even telling the truth -- loving him, in her own rather...unorthodox way. (Though I'm sure learning he'd fallen in love with someone else also provided it's own motivation -- the grass is greener on the other side and all.)

Both of those things were totally awesome. And the first was quite unexpected! I was totally thinking Katherine would fool Stefan too (and was like, oh noez, Stefan, don't accidentally cheat on Elena!) but no, that boy absolutely knows who he's dating.

Good call! I didn't realize until Katherine chopped off John's fingers. And I'm going to pay attention to Elena/Katherine's posture next episode - how Nina moved was TOTALLY evocative and distinctive, but I didn't pick up on that specific difference.

Someone tried to ~school~ me today on how Damon totally wasn't forcing himself on Elena and I needed to ~learn the difference~

Dammit, fandom, stop giving Damon fans a bad rep! You ~we~ can love the guy without MAKING EXCUSES FOR INEXCUSABLE BEHAVIOR.

Seriously. I haven't been this disappointed since Vicki died.

Agreed. It's high time TVD started killing MEN to give the WOMEN something to angst about.

I could see that but I'm not-so-secretly hoping that Katherine came back because she was a.) just bored or b.) because of Elena or c.) some combination of both.

I did get hinted at that a certain somebody would be coming back, so that helped with the guessing. But watch that scene where she comes up onto the porch; see the way her shoulders kind of curve forward a little, and she doesn't hold her head up all the way? Compare it too -- well, the scenes in 2.01, but even the part where she stabs John. It's really cool.

I mean, I myself can't even enjoy his performances anymore because of the feeling that the show's never gonna get him real repercussions, but -- that scene even -- well, it wasn't okay, but it stopped before it got really, really bad. (I did dislike it, in terms of writing, that the only refusal that was effective was essentially 'I don't want to hurt you' instead of 'I don't want this.') In any other scene, the way he wrapped his hands desperately around hers when she said she cared about him would have given me a pang, and with another character sufficient ass-kicking, acknowledgement that it was wrong and groveling might have brought him back into my low good graces. (Too much precedence for Damon ATM for me.) But don't DENY WHAT IT WAS, CRAZY PERSON.

Oh, I am definitely hoping Katherine came back for those reasons, I just can't let myself get my hopes up too high. *sigh*

O. MY. GOD. HAVE YOU SEEN THE PROMO FOR THE NEXT EPISODE

WHERE CAROLINE *SPOILER* DAMON AND HE *SPOILER* (not the bit at the end) THAT WAS GLORIOUS
