Title: Blessings
Fandom: Legend of the Seeker
Characters: Richard/Kahlan
Rating: PG-13
Author's Note: written for [livejournal.com profile] schmoop_bingo , "anniversary – first." This is arguably the most saccharine thing I have ever written.
Summery: Two things Richard has given Kahlan.

A year after their marriage, Kahlan woke up she normally did on the mornings (becoming more and more common) when she wasn't roused from sleep by an enemy attack, Zedd bursting into her and Richard's chambers bearing ill-news, or Cara storming in to tell them they're being lazy and boring and they need to get out of bed now. Which is to say, this morning, Kahlan woke up to her husband kissing her neck, just behind her ear, murmuring her name into her skin.

"Happy anniversary, Richard," Kahlan said, wiggling back against him.

"Happy anniversary, Kahlan," Richard replied, pulling her hips close to his for a long moment and then rolling away.

She made a little sound of distress and rolled over to watch Richard pad naked across the room.

"I got you a present," he informed her over his shoulder.

Kahlan knew this. Richard was many wonderful things but subtle was not one of them.

"You didn't have to get me a present," she said, playfully. "You've given me so many already."

Richard gave her a puzzled look over his shoulder.

Kahlan felt the truth of her words deep in her bones but she didn't know how to explain so that Richard would understand. He didn't realize what it meant for her, to be his wife, to have an identity that wasn't tied to being adored and feared all at once. The first time she'd introduced herself as Mrs. Cypher, she'd giggled so hard that she hadn't been able to tell the baker which kind of bread she wanted. And she hadn't even minded having to eat pumpernickel for two days straight.

Another name wasn't even the most precious thing he'd gifted her with.

Love-speeches not being something that Confessors were taught, Kahlan bit her lip, inarticulate, and propped herself up on her elbows to watch Richard search for something in the far back of his wardrobe.

When he turned around, she couldn't help but gasp. He held a pair of gorgeous slippers. They were a light, lovely blue with delicate gold lacings across the arch and when Kahlan slipped her feet inside, her toes were caressed by wool as soft as clouds.

Kahlan kicked her feet a little in hedonistic pleasure and then threw herself into Richard's arms, hugging him tightly.

"So do you like them?" Richard asked, grinning.

"They are the best slippers in D'Hara and the Midlands both," Kahlan declared. And yet, they were still not the most precious gift Richard had ever given her. The most precious gift Richard had given her was the daughter even now growing inside Kahlan, no bigger than a night wisp, a daughter conceived in true love and not the induced adoration of Confession.

She hadn't told Richard yet. She had heard stories of how fragile a child was in the first weeks and if Zedd was wrong, if this daughter wasn't strongly rooted in Kahlan's womb, she would spare Richard that pain. For now, it was her secret, this blessing Richard had given her, even if he didn't know it yet.
