redbrunja: (tw | queen & lionheart)

There was a post going around tumblr that really got under my skin - it was a fairy accurate summary of the king and lionheart dynamic, but the line about not being able to find a example with a lady just***... triggered all my past experience of people dismissing het and femme-slash because [pick a square from your slash fangirl bingo card, pick any square].

*** I also want to note that the person I linked from tagged this post 'Kate/Clint' SO CLEARLY I AM NOT THE ONLY PERSON WHO THINKS THAT THIS DYNAMIC EXISTS WITH LADIES.

So, queen and lionheart dynamics. The examples that came to mind:

Lydia/Allison (Teen Wolf)
Sabriel/Touchstone (Sabriel, bolded because so much yes.)
Tremaine/Ilias (although that's more spy/lionheart)
Mulan/Aurora (Once Upon A Time)
Jane/Darcy (would be the super-fluffy version of this trope)
Any Evil Queen/Huntsman story would be the evil example of this trope
I'd accept a case for Hermione/Ron here.
I think a case could also be made for Cameron/John from TSCC.
Richard/Cara (LOTS)

I think I'm going to reprise a meme from ye ages past, because I'm bored and I like to make fandom-y lists and also, as the title would suggest, I like to ship.

(I'm going to be kind of throwing ships onto these lists, in an attempt to shake things up and maybe mention ships I don't often do. But don't worry, some of my old stand-bys are here.)

So I came across this on tumblr:

Screen Shot 2013-06-01 at 9.33.01 PM

Which got me thinking about characters who read as ‘not-straight.’ Basically, I’m going to take this as a chance to mention about some badass queer ladies (canonically or noncanically) and bug me in the comments about your favorites ‘no way is he/she straight’ characters in the comments. Remember to show your work.

So let me mention:

1. What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get?

Any pairing that involves two (or more) penises. I know, I know, that is as subjective an opinion as my feelings about coconut (worst flavor on the planet) and about as much fun to discuss (coconut is the flavor of the devil, people).

2. Are there any popular fandom OTPs you only BroTP?

Cara/Kahlan. Trust me, I see the subtext, I totally get where people are coming from with this pairing. In just about any other situation I would
be all over the hot, fierce ladies and their classic kind warrior/broken bird dynamic and rooting for them to have epically sexy sex… but I just want them to be friends and hang out and kill people together, while Kahlan sexes up her Seeker and ends up having little badass confessor-daughters with him.

3. Any fandoms that don’t appeal to you?

Hmmmm. There are shows/movies/books that I don’t feel the need to seek out fanfics for but if a narrative makes me feel fannish and there's a fandom, I'll participate. And frankly, I've had some good luck and good experiences even with NOTORIOUSLY psychotic fandoms.

4. Have you ever unfollowed/unfriended someone? Why?

HAVE I EVER. I have unfollowed people because our fandoms diverged, I’ve unfollowed people because I stopped enjoying the content that they posted, I’ve unfollowed people because I discovered that I didn’t like them very much, I’ve unfollowed people because my flist was getting unreadable, I’ve unfollowed people because they unfollowed me first.

For me, this questions was a little bit like, ‘do you breath air?’ Yes, of course, who doesn’t?

5. Do you have a NO!TP in [insert fandom here]?

I have many, many NO!TPs. (I’m defining this as the very idea of the ship makes me go ‘NO!’)

-Clint/Loki.

-Natasha/Loki. (I do ship Natasha/Clint fucking on Loki’s bloody, dismembered corpse. Or just murdering the fuck out of him and then having celebratory sex in the backseat of the getaway car.)

-Tony/anyone but Pepper. (If Pepper want to hook up with Steve or Natasha or Darcy or even some really fucked up dark!fic with Obediah, I'd be there.)

-Aang/Katara (FOREVER BITTER. Seriously, my mom recently found out that Legend of Korra existed and she was like, ‘do you want to watch that?’ And I went, ‘I’ll watch that when I stop being angry about the ending of Avatar.’ Nobody hold their breath on that score.)

-Andy/April – ugh, why would you pair an awesome, deadpan girl like April with a moronic waste of space like Andy!

-Veronica Mars/Duncan Kane.

-Blair Waldorf/Chuck Bass.

-Any variation of Elena/Damon/Stefan.

-Caroline Forbes/Matt Donovan.

-Regina/Charming.

-M'gann/Lagaan.

Aaron Cross/Eric Byer.

6. Has fandom ever ruined a pairing for you?

It's more often the writers ruining a ship for me.

7. Is there anything you used to like, but now can’t stand?

Naruto. Like, I was never under any illusions that the manga/anime was good - I was always just there for the fanworks, but I was undeniably READING the manga and at a certain point I reached my ‘this is bullshit storytelling' threshold and peaced the hell out. I also stopped reading Soul Eater. There was no big break up or anything like that – I just stopped caring enough to hunt down the next month’s scanlation.

8. Unpopular opinion about [insert fandom here]?

I can't think of any off the top of my head. Suggestions are welcome, though!

9. Have you received anon hate? What about?

No, I’ve yet to receive fan hate, therby solidifying my ‘no name’ fan status. I have had a ‘discussion’ that the person I was discussing the
subject with felt the need to delete my comments. I really wish I had screen caps, because I would have have LOVED proof that I was strictly
offering concrit about her fic and was in fact refusing to make it personal and comment about her husband his relationship with their child, which she kept insisting that I was.

10. Any fandom you’re ashamed of being in?

Avatar.

You know in the second episode of Green Lantern when Razer is like, ‘In my heart I am guilty of murder’? That’s how I feel about Avatar fandom. I don’t think I was ACTUALLY an obnoxious, overly passionate fan (okay, I was a little obnoxious and over passionate) but in my heart, I was REALLY obnoxious and over-passionate.

I really love Avatar as a show and I'm hugely grateful for its existence and the fanworks it inspired because it came to me at a time in my life when I absolutely needed it, but.... in my heart I'm guilty of being a bratty fan about the show and Katara/Zuko.

In other news, Cartoon Network canceled Young Justice and Green Lantern: The Animated Series.

I couldn’t care less about Young Justice – I think that the writers made some very dumb creative choices for the second season that the show has yet to recover from (and now never will) and the scheduling dickery was classic ‘make a show hard to find and follow; justify cancelation’ from the network. I am grinding my teeth about Green Lantern, though. I have/had hope that
spoilers for the most recent GL episode )

On the subject of ironic timing, I have actually been meaning to talk about times that I am grateful when shows were canceled because sometimes I am (NOT THIS TIME, THOUGH).

These are the shows that I am grateful were canceled because it meant that I had a basically complete arc of a show I loved all the way through. (The Sarah Conner Chronicles are not listed because I still cannot believe that Fox didn’t give us a season three; Young Justice is not listed because I am so annoyed with the current season my previous love is already tainted; Green Lantern *could potentially be listed* if

before the curtain drops.)

So, without further ado, shows where cancelation was a secret blessing:

  • Firefly
  • Legend of the Seeker
  • Dark Angel

[livejournal.com profile] mollivanders asked me about the presentation of a strong woman in fiction; E.g. Black Widow, Kahlan Amnell, Buffy, Katniss, Johanna, etc etc etc.

Let me just say, the women mentioned are some of my favorites. I am a sucker for just about every flavor of action girl but what makes the listed women awesome is that while all of them are fierce warriors in their own right (Kahlan and Buffy in particular are both as stylish as they are deadly) they all have different and interesting facets to their personality. Kahlan and Buffy both long for a more normal life, Natasha Romanoff is either (movie) atoning for a bloody past or (comics) a fierce, vengeful SHIELD agent who protects women who have been victimized by others. Katniss just wants everyone to leave her alone and asking her to have feelings about things that aren't a.) hunting or b.) her little sister and Johanna wants to BURN SOME SHIT DOWN.

[livejournal.com profile] natural_blue_26: Talk to me about princessess- in ancient lore, modern fiction, Disney or their OUaT counterparts. Which have you enjoyed, and which make you throw up your hands in dispair? Anything, really.

(Also, she mentioned that she had a wedding today? Is that your wedding? If so, congrats!)

I'm going to talk about my two favorite Princess Tropes.

First, The Badass Princess. By which I mean, Leia Organa, leader of the rebellion. (Kahlan and Snow are worthy daughters, imho.) Nothing like a clever, privileged, scrappy, princess who through circumstances and/or a desire for change, takes up arms. MY FIERCE LADIES IN WHITE. Which leads into my second trope, Fallen Princess. In my head, I have a slightly different definition than tv tropes - I'm thinking of the Princesses who lose everything (or almost everything) and then continue on. This overlaps with several badass princesses (especially Leia and Snow White) but the really key factor to me is the refusal to let misfortune prevent the princess from living a happy life (where badass princesses are often focused on political/social goals, fallen princesses are more focused on personal goals). For example, Caroline from 2 Broke Girls handled her loss of wealth "like a badass" and then joined forces with a friend to start a business. Another example is Aurora. I didn't have much emotional attachment to Aurora until the audience learns that after losing her True Love and having her entire world destroyed, she was intending to travel to a NEW WORLD to build a NEW LIFE for herself including NEW LOVE.* I just absolutely adore characters with that kind of motivation to make their lives better.

*There are many reasons why I'm sad that Philip is going to be rescued but the one relevant to this post is that I would absolutely love getting to see someone from FTL choose to come to Storybrooke/the modern world and then build a life there. Plus, I want the show acknowledge that it is possible for someone to have more than one True Love.

Okay, two doses of [livejournal.com profile] fannish5 in one (from several weeks ago, because I fail at being timely).

Five canon events that you found unbelievable and wished had not happened.

1.)

Killing off Coulson

First, I think killing off a fan favorite who is a huge part of the narrative cohesion of your multi-movie universe is a dumb move. THAT SAID, if you are going to kill him off, you have got to do so in a way that feels inevidable. I just cannot get over the fact that Fury lying to the team (more than he already did) would have been just as effective. And it was like, only Tony and Steve who actually needed the kick that Coulson's death provided (or, you know, possessed).

2.)

Arvin Sloane living till the end of Alias.

Friends or not, I spent seasons thee and four going, 'why does Jack not just snipe this bastard?'

3.)

Dov's infatuation for Gail being dropped like a hot potato.

First off, you do not waste as A+ love confession like that. Secondly, it makes it hard to root for Dov and his awesome ATF gf when he was in love with anther woman in the middle of when they were dating. Third, Gail is fucking awesome and I do no buy Dov OR Chris moving on as fast as it seemed they moved on at the end of season two.

4.)

Logan Kale regaining the ability to walk.

While I felt like Logan's desire to regain the ability to walk and the ways in which he would betray his own morals to do so could lead to some fascinating storytelling, I hated how the writers seemed to think that the wheelchair was a chastity belt and that he couldn't be with Max if he was paralyzed and I ALSO hate how it seems like in most narratives with characters in a wheelchair, sooner or later they are magically fixed, because, IDEK, don't you know paralyzed people can't ever be heroes?

5.) Tom and Ann on Parks. Everything about that pairing (as a romantic pairing) is MADE OF FAIL. God, I just want Ann to date an actual adult. It's like, no wonder she made a fool of herself with Chris - say what you want about that man, he is an adult.

Name the five moments in canon that made you believe your favorite pairing belongs together.

1. Clint/Natasha

Clint: Do you know what it's like to be unmade?
Natasha: You know I do.

2. Dimitri/Anya

"Princesses don't marry kitchen boys."

3. Andy/Sam.

At the end of episode 3x02, when you see Andy with her head in Sam's lap at the end of a long day. That convinced me, more than the prior two seasons of pining and near misses - that those two could make it.

4.) Richard/Kahlan

Kahlan has a knife at Richard's throat.

"Did I do something wrong?"
"I'm just not used to people touching me."

DON'T WORRY, SWEETIE, RICHARD IS GOING TO SPEND TWO SEASONS FIXING THAT.

5.) Tony/Pepper

Tony: I don't like it when you have plans.
Pepper: I'm allowed to have plans on my birthday.
Tony: It's your birthday?
Pepper: Yes.
Tony: I knew that. Already?
Pepper: Yeah. Isn't that strange? It's the same day as last year.
Tony: Well, get yourself something nice from me.
Pepper: I already did.
Tony: And?
Pepper: Oh, it was very nice.
Tony: Yeah?
Pepper: Very tasteful. Thank you, Mr. Stark.
Tony:You're welcome, Miss Potts.

THE TOTALLY IMPROMPTU FESTIVAL OF AWESOME LADIES

This post made me ridiculously happy and awakened a huge bunch of Legend of the Seeker FEELINGS. You know how a lot of people have really intense feelings about Xena? That is kind of how I feel about Seeker. I rewatched parts of the pilot last like and I am basically all KAHLAN MY BB, HOW ARE YOU REAL? Also, Richard, can I like your deliciously honorable abs?

Something else that is making me happy is that I've discovered several people on tumblr who feel the same way about Regina (i.e. love her) that I do.

And then I have to go to work.

I found last week's [livejournal.com profile] fannish5  really apropos, given the discussion that The Cape sparked. So before I answer last Friday's question, a word on pilots: I find it perfectly acceptable (and do) judge a show by it's pilot. A pilot is like the first line of a story, the first chapter of a book – it should introduce us to the world, the characters, and show us why we should care and why this show is going to be worth the viewers time. If the writers/showrunners can't do that... well, that's not a great sign for the show as a whole. That is probably why about 90% of the shows in my tag list have decent-to-amazing pilots; that's part of what it takes to get me watching. Some beyond outstanding pilots: Alias' (I've rewatched that episode about six times), Veronica Mars', Wonderfalls, and Soul Eater's (which hooked me and gave me an OTP by the time I'd finished watched the teaser and the opening credits).

Now, on to the fannish5 question:

Five favorite tv series that started with bad pilot episodes.

1.) Legend of the Seeker

2.) Dollhouse

3.) The Vampire Diaries

4.) In Plain Sight

5.) Criminal Minds
