Er...this leads me to at least one particular ship I am fanatical about right now. ^^; Even though...I'm not sure if it is because I am twisted or something.
Orihara Izaya/Kamichika Rio from Durarara!! (an anime/manga, though I am probably talking about the anime version). The former, the guy, is a psychopath/sociopath who loves manipulation, psychology and power play. The latter, a teenaged girl, was someone who he had messed with emotionally in ways, though he had never really thrown her into extremely horrible situations (unless you count holding her from jumping over the edge of a building a horrible situation, which I would agree is scary). The thing is, Izaya was able to convince the girl that he was an ordinary, sensitive guy from over the internet with family issues like herself through his words, enough to make the girl feel that there was hope in the world when her father was cheating on her mother and her mother didn't care (very messed up family she had). What's more, Rio had two things that most of the teenaged girls of her age didn't: intelligence and courage. It struck me that she was someone who might, with enough observation and time, be able to keep up with Izaya in ways to counter him.
However...just because that was the case, Izaya/Rio was one of those pairings that became a seriously dark guilty pleasure. Not only is Izaya incapable of loving anyone (sociopaths, after all, feel only shallow feelings for the most part), but the fact that he could still manipulate Rio to some extent showed that this pairing was not something to be taken nicely. There are no rainbows or singing birds or flowers for this kind of relationship, and it was precisely that which attracted me to it. Rio was the kind of bright girl who could hold her own and find a predictable life (graduate from high school, go to college, find a job, be married to a normal man), but she was also the kind of girl who would choose something not so predictable. She had an inner fire that made her very determined and intense and overwhelmingly dynamic that attracts me to her persona deeply. Knowing Izaya, who is someone who likes to play with people and would find it amusing to see Rio living well and trying to defy his words, he would very likely come back to her just to see if he could mess with her.
Wow, that sounds deliciously interesting. What I like about it is while it sounds super-fucked up and screwy, the power isn't all in one direction; the way you describe her, and how she would sort of choose the male character is very interesting.
