Summary: "He sees a flash of blonde in his peripheral vision and for a quarter of a heartbeat he thinks that Lexie has come to rescue him from himself."
He sees a flash of blonde in his peripheral vision and for a quarter of a heartbeat he thinks that Lexie has come to rescue him from himself.
Then Caroline hits him, with all the strength of her newly vampiric body, and he goes down hard enough to crack the floorboards but not nearly hard enough to kept from surging back up, backhanding her into the wall.
"Please leave," he says. "Caroline, please." He doesn't want Klaus to learn she's here, doesn't want another hostage to the Original. He doesn't want to hurt her more, doesn't want to obey to his own desires.
"You son of a bitch," Caroline spits out along with a mouthful of bloody and broken teeth and Stefan realizes, belatedly, that he didn't just betray Elena. He betrayed the whole life he'd been living in Mystic Falls, and all the people who'd filled it up.
She lungs at him and he lets her come, lets her punch halfway through his chest before he grabs her throat and slams her back down onto the floor. He straddles her this time, pins her down.
She smiles, fangs bloody.
The thought, I didn't just betray Elena, slips through his mind again, and then the needle is in his neck, vervain eating through his blood like acid.
"Hello, brother," Damon whispers into his ear.
