Despite paying 10 dollars for shipping and ordering them last Sunday, my Hunger Games nail-polishes are not going to arrive until monday. NO ONE HAS EVER SUFFERED LIKE I SUFFER. (Tumblr with its amazing pictures of unbelievably perfect manicures is not helping, either.)

April 1st is to be a fandom holiday. Seriously, a new episode of Game of Thrones + Once Upon A Time? I might just faint from awesome.

I love pictures of the Once cast playing with their electronics while in costume. It's delightful.

Also, to gear up for the Game of Thrones premiere:

Also, Game of Thrones Kink Meme. It's pretty awesome, except for the tragic lack of Dany/Jorah.

Lets see...I bought a couple of hardcore board games called The Ares Project, which is basically a war/strategy game staged as four different factions battling for territory on Mars. It's not the kind of thing I would normally play, but the mechanic is very interesting and I love the setting. I also bought Elder Sign and Arkham Horror, which are games based on the Cthulhu mythos. Arkham Horror is probably one of the most complex board games I have ever seen, and it's also a modern American classic. Elder Sign is a simplified version of that. The sheer amount of thought that went into designing these games just blows me away. And what amazes me is that if they were computer games, they would be extraordinarily simple.

AND I bought a bunch of casual card games! Some of them for kids. I've been in a sort of surprise babysitting position a couple of times this quarter, and a game of Candy Land reminded me how a game can keep the kiddies occupied and nondestructive (I know this for a fact, because before we were playing the game the kid in question spilled sugary soda all over the cafe floor...Which I completely blame myself for because, when kids aren't occupied, they occupy themselves by spinning spinny trays and spillage may or may not ensue). I've decided to always have a small, portable game in my backpack just for this reason.

One is called Gubs, and it's this fun little game where you're trying to destroy your opponent's Gub-cards while protecting your own - and it moves quickly and it's the kind of thing kids could grasp quickly and stay occupied with. Two I haven't played yet, one is called Chronicle and the other is called The Mountain of Inferno. I'm excited about the second one because it's based on the Journey to the West, and the drawings are so freaking adorable.

The one that arrived in the mail today is called Kittens in a Blender - it's a card game. I got my mom to play it and we both couldn't stop laughing because it is so horrible and so funny. It's a really fast-paced game, it's fun, and the mechanic is so deliciously simple. The plot is basically that these curious kittens are wondering around in a kitchen and kitchens are dangerous for kittens, so the object of the game is to get all your kittens out of the kitchen before they wind up in the blender. I was skeptical at first - but there was zero gore, the kitten drawings were so cute that mom and I couldn't help but get attached to them, and a portion of the profits go towards a no-kill cat rescue.

And that was probably more than you needed/wanted to know! ^^;;; But I'm really interested in board game design right now and I kinda splurged...There are a lot of really interesting casual games on the market for teens and grownups (instead of just families, which has been the traditional situation in America) now and it just keeps growing! I really wanted a sample of something from the whole spectrum.

Your comment was actually really helpful. I'm kind of been bemoaning the fact that I don't play board games much anymore, because it's a great way to be doing something with friends while still being able to chat.

I actually put kittens in a blender on my amazon wishlist.

Hurrah! I'm glad.

I've only recently rediscovered them myself through the game design center at my university and I've kinda fallen in love with the medium.

I would also recommend looking into the German Board Games, which are characterized for being good for groups of people since everyone plays until the very end and they tend to be constructive rather than directly conflict-driven. Settlers of Cataan and Carcassone are fun and pretty accessible for when you get to shopping around.
