Joss Whedon to direct Avengers 2.
I cannot express how happy this makes me. Largely because his treatment of Natasha exceeded my wildest, wildest expectations and I would put money on that continuing.
BRB, SOBBING FROM HAPPINESS.

I think if Joss could spend most of his life writing awesome, kick-ass women, he would. Unfortunately, I think that's why some of his shows got cancelled when they did. T_T; THE WORLD STILL IS IN IT'S "GIRLS HAVE COOTIES" FAZE. IT NEEDS TO GROW UP.

To be fair, i don't think that's all of it - there were concept (and sometimes network) reasons for why Firefly and Dollhouse did so poorly, and frankly I don't know how Buffy and Angel can't be considered huge commercial and critical successes.

I love the philosophy and ethics of identity that form the backbone of Dollhouse, but there was a huge giant hole in the boat right from the start: TV shows can't rely on a hero to develop a personality somewhere mid-season 2 as part of her personal journey. The protagonist has to be compelling from minute one. That's why Ahiru is the lead in Princess Tutu, instead of Mytho. BECAUSE MINDLESS BRAINWASHING VICTIMS WHO LACK EMOTIONS AND GET RAPED AS PART OF THEIR BRAINWASHING ARE NOT EXCITING LEADS. If Caroline had been the side character instead of the protagonist, we could have watched her growth from the side and had a more relatable lead. Like Dr. Fred as the morally compromised Doctor of the dolls, who has to navigate the conspiracy-ridden Dollhouse and protect her charges, and train up Echo, only to discover in season 2 that she herself was Whiskey.

I think you're right. If there had been a stronger trend of sci-fi shows doing well (besides Trek, the exception for most of the 90s), Fox might have not actively tried to kill Firefly.

For me it was not so much where Caroline started as how long Joss expected me to be invested in her without change. Like, if I had know the time frame between her being a pawn and her gaining agency (which should have been the length of a movie or the length of a miniseries), that's one thing. But asking me to just indefinitely hang out with Caroline while she has personalities of the week? No. That's one reason that Dollhouse always got SO MUCH BETTER when Joss thought he was about to get canceled.
If it had come after Battlestar Galactica and all these Marvel movies, it would have had a fighting chance.
I think you're right about that. Although Fox has a history of getting this kind of off the beaten path shows and then not actually wanting them.

That would have been SO cool.

I'm really interested to see if he's going to do an adaption of the Infinity Gauntlet storyline.

And if he's going to be thus involved in the other tie-in movies? WE WILL HAVE BLACK WIDOW YET <3
