So, given that Cold Days is coming out soon, I figured that I should buckle down and read Ghost Story.

I disliked it exactly as much as I expected for exactly the reasons I expected.

I hate stuff that deals with the afterlife in general and I hated it here. One, considering the angel(s) of Death and all the talk about Satan cheating (they talked around it, but for realz, we all know what's going on) the afterlife of Butcher's is SUPER-FUCKING CHRISTIAN. Ugh. Regardless of Butcher's personal beliefs, his work is overtly, blatantly Christian at this point. He managed to keep it more balanced in earlier work but this? Oh, how the Catholic Church would love this book.

I completely skimmed over just about everything that wasn't Butters (who is super awesome), Molly, or Murphy.

Molly taking several levels in badass was only expected and Murphy going harder and grimmer was believable. I wasn't thrilled that Harry tied their issues directly into him, you know? Like, with the reveal that Molly had helped him kill himself - that plus the battle in the last book was enough without piling on 'oh, she not-secretly really loves you!' It's not puppy love it's real, if unrequited! Gag, gag, gag.

Harry's line about Murphy feeling so guilty because she knew in her heart of hearts that Kincaid had killed him made me skeeve, though.

I'm finding Murphy and Harry's issues with Marcone less and less rational. Just admit that he is a valued if not trusted ally.

I feel like what Butcher really should have done is just have released a novella where Harry had mysteriously vanished and Molly and Murphy had to deal instead of the whole 'he'd dead! Lol, not really." Me: *yawn* I ONLY SAW THAT COMING FROM TWENTY MILES AWAY.

Maggie as a Carpenter is DUMB. Ugh. I mean, I know Harry loves the Carpenters, but I don't know if he would be okay with them raising his kid (the religion!) and I feel like it's the first place anyone would look for Harry's kid. (Which is not a lot of people but what if Murphy is kidnapped and the information ripped out of her head?) To use one example.

Honestly, I don't feel that putting Maggie in the household of a former knight of the cross, with a powerful up and coming witch, WITH FUCKING CHARITY, siblings who are fighting the good fight, is going to keep that kid as safe as Harry would wish.
There were way too many pop culture references.
