So, about two weeks ago, [livejournal.com profile] qualapec pitched Hannibal to me via e-mail. She mentioned several factors, but the significant one was the fucked up fathers-daughter relationship between Hannibal (who eats people) and Will Graham (a FBI agent not-so-slowly going crazy) and Abigail Hobbs(her father was a cannibal who was grooming her to be the same as well as using her to help murder girls, he almost slaughters Abigail in her kitchen, she wants to grow up to be an FBI agent now).

So I first officially quit the show when I realized that Hannibal was going to keep killing people I cared about (Abigail’s friend! Intrepid FBI trainee!) instead of the rude people I hated and wanted to see die a grisly death (bitchy reporter!).

But then I realized I had missed the part where Hannibal made Abigail breakfast for dinner! (FYI, I initially though Hannibal also grooming Abigail to be a serial killer but after the most recent episode I AM NOT SURE. He seemed so honestly loving!) So I watched that. And then saw the part where Will bought Abigail a fly-tying kit. HE WANTED TO TAKE HER FISHING. HE WANTED TO TAKE HER FISHING *WEEPS* *WAILS* *BEATS BREAST* WILL WANTED TO TAKE HER FISHING, LIKE HIS FATHER TOOK HIM FISHING (How did his father die? I’m betting suicide.) ABIGAIL’S FIRST SERIAL KILLER DAD TAUGHT HER TO HUNT, WILL WANTS TO TEACH HER TO FISH, HANNIBAL WANTS TO TEACH ABIGAIL HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER (AND PROBABLY HOW TO COOK, TOO), SHE IS GOING TO GROW UP TO BE THE MOST WELL-ROUNDED SERIAL-KILING LITTLE FBI AGENT EVER. (Because I that's what I really want - Abigail to grow up to be lady FBI version of Dexter.)

So, yeah, quitting this show the first time didn’t take. CLEARLY.

Some final thoughts:

The creepiest moment in the minisode series was seeing Will’s immaculate drawer of white t-shirts and socks. That is some fucked up shit right there.

I love how in this show, being a vegetarian is like being a cannibalistic serial killer on any other show. "Meat ruins salad!" says bitchy reporter. Me: Hannibal, you kill and eat that bitch right the fuck now.

Hannibal and Will arguing over how to raise Abigail... that is all.

I do wish Hannibal would stop killing randomly. Rude! He kills the rude!!!

Rude! He kills the rude!!!

Exactly! That's a key part of his characterization, and it's how we, the audience, are able to root for him.

I am just so impressed with how this show is handling Abigail's characterization and backstory. I've talked it over with friends, and I love how every flashback she's had about her father is actually all about her and is all about helping the audience understand her better. Because he's dead. Every flashback or nightmare she has involving her father is about her and her survival and this last episode just cemented that. In any other show, it would have been about what a creep her dad is, and I LOVE THAT IT'S ABOUT HER INSTEAD.

And the bit in the last episode about Abigail being the only good thing in Will's life DESTROYED ME.

I love how in this show, being a vegetarian is like being a cannibalistic serial killer on any other show. "Meat ruins salad!" says bitchy reporter. Me: Hannibal, you kill and eat that bitch right the fuck now.

Ha!

EDIT: I'm also super glad you gave this show a second chance!

I was annoyed by the show when I saw the first ep 'cause Hannibal -- the thing about him, the reason that people have an interest in the character instead of feeling queasy and hitting the back button, is that he'll exclusively kill assholes. The sort of people who would be dead twenty times over if the average person could set someone on fire by thinking about it, he actually makes the effort to kill instead of taking an anger management course or something.

I would've quit, except I was curious about Gillian Anderson and Gina Torres, who I'd heard were going to be on the show. Now when Gillian's on the screen all I care about is how Hannibal's semi-awkwardly going "I have a friend now, and I don't even want to kill him!" in his therapy sessions.

I just hope Hannibal switches to killing only jerkfaces. He has a daughter to make a good impression for now, after all.

I'm actually kind of attached to Freddie Lounds? She is a terrible person with fabulous hair and fashion. I also enjoy that she's such a predator, and yet also a vegetarian. Which means she might be the only person on the show to avoid eating humans. (I know there are ways to sneak people into non-obvious things - Alana's beer!! - but he was surprised at her being vegetarian SO.) And Hannibal is basically Hades (THE POMEGRANATE IMAGERY), so Freddie is the only person not drawn into his world through food.

Also Hannibal is just. He's really evil? And the politeness is just part of his person suit, so. I don't really mind him killing people for ridiculously minor rude moments and/or to save his own ass. (Honestly the way he fucks with Will's head disturbs me a lot more.)

I love Abigail and her survival instinct and manipulative tendencies so much. I just want her to win everything. I think the FBI agent thing was more of a whim? It would really be the worst choice ever, even if she did someone manage to get accepted with her history.

man i've got to say i love that the show can get you on hannibal's side thoroughly even when you are totally cognizant of the fact that he is THE WORST.

but i've also got a HUGE soft spot for freddie. she fucks shit up! it's hilarious and great! :DD
