I'm working for a little longer than normal today, so a coworker can have the day off, so I'm going to need something to entertain me.

Fandom Tennis Match Meme!

Okay, here's how this is going to work. You comment with a fandom question. I answer it and then ask you a question that has some thematic relevance to the question you asked me.

I feel this meme is always a good choice.

My first thought regarding Kate/Clint becoming canon is a mental scream of horror. Like all people who ACTUALLY SHIP THIS PAIRING I am hugely reassured by the fact that Fraction has said it’s not happening on his watch.

If it HAD to be canon, rationally, the best way to preserve the awesomeness of Kate and Clint would be to have them be in a super-super casual relationship and have it be explicit that Kate is continuing to hook up with Noh-varr while nailing Clint.

BUT WHAT I WOULD WANT IN MY HEART OF HEARTS would be this long, slow-burn, mutually unrequired romance. Clint would be like, ‘fuck, I’m in love with Katie-Kate but she’s too young for me and also I’m terrible at relationships and being an adult.’ Kate would be like, ‘fuck, I’m in love with Clint but he’s terrible at relationships. Like, DID I MENTION HOW TERRIBLE AT RELATIONSHIPS AND ALSO ADULTHOOD HE IS?’ And, like, Kate has emotional intimacy issues AT THE BEST OF TIMES. Can you imagine how much she’d freak out at the prospect of dating Clint? There would be epic freakouts.

So they’d both dance around each other and then maybe they’re be an alien invasion or something and they’d end up kissing passionately in the smoking ruins and then there would be more freak outs and then lol-tastic commentary from everyone and more making out.

Your question: favorite pairing that involves a significant age difference?

D'you want to see Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver in Avengers 2?
Wednesday, May 29th, 2013 08:24 am (UTC)
I 100% DO NOT want to see Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver being in the Avengers. The X-men world doesn’t fit with the Avengers world in the comics, and it SURE AS FUCK doesn’t fit with the movies, and Scarlet Witch is WAY too powerful to fit in nicely with the established universe AS WELL AS the ridiculous rights issues mean that we’re not going to have two different versions of Quicksilver in two different franchises? He is not that fucking awesome. In fact, I kind of resent that fact that fuck out of that character now, given that he’s going to be in TWO movies and my badass forever girl Natasha Romanoff doesn’t have a movie of her own and my fav ladies Jessica Drew and Carol Danvers aren’t going to be in Avengers 2.

What marvel character would you like to see in the movies?
Wednesday, May 29th, 2013 05:32 pm (UTC)
Agreed!

Ummmmm. There are a bunch, actually, but what I mostly want out of Avengers 2 is NOT a whole lot of new characters but proper time spent with the team we've got now, moving past that first coming together to actually work together and be friends (/allies/whatever). That said, I would actually love Carol to show up. (And get her own movie. ALONG WITH MY BLACK WIDOW MOVIE WHERE IS MY BLACK WIDOW MOVIE WORLD?!) I'd love Black Panther or Wasp or (especially) Kate, except Kate doesn't make much sense to me in the MCU-verse yet, so Carol!

That would be WONDERFUL. Ugh, I'd like that so much.

Same!

Kate is such a comics character and I would be SO upset if they screwed her up, that I'd prefer they actually NOT put her in the movies.

Who is the woman/character in the icon and what attracted you to that fandom (if it is a stock photo unrelated to fandom, what drew you to the image?)
Saturday, June 1st, 2013 06:29 am (UTC)
That is Aisha from the movie The Losers (which I totally recommend).

She's your standard super-badass fierce bitch, and though you can't tell, she's holding a machine gun and about to kill some folk.

What is the most recent badass lady you've been introduced to?
Thursday, June 6th, 2013 02:04 pm (UTC)
The lead character, Elle, in the book A Conspiracy of Alchemists. It was an alright book, a bit of rollicking fun. But she is an airship pilot who is trying to find her kidnapped father.

So which scene was it that really drew you into Hannibal?
Sunday, June 2nd, 2013 08:04 am (UTC)
Hannibal: it wasn’t a particular scene; it was more the fact that I watched one episode and then was intrigued enough to watch the next, and then I was intrigued enough to watch the next, etc.

What made you initially watch Hannibal? Because off-hand, the premise does not make me think of you.

What made you initially watch Hannibal? Because off-hand, the premise does not make me think of you.

This is very true. Normally I don't touch serial killer fiction with a ten foot pole. I thought it would be more like Dexter at first, which is the kind of thing that makes me really, deeply uncomfortable. SO when I was seeing Hannibal gifs on Tumblr, my understanding of the show was that it was about Hannibal (I had a cursory knowledge of the premise because I watched the movies as a kid) making some guy into his protege. I also thought it was an HBO show, and there would be the prescribed heavily sexualized violence against women. Basically - I thought it would be torture porn and another male power wank fest. That's the kind of thing I can't do.

Then a couple of my friends told me a little more. One of them said she usually has the same kind of problem with serial killer fiction, said she wasn't bothered by Hannibal, so that was a plus right away. Then they told me about Will being the agent who eventually catches Hannibal, and how he's struggling with his own demons, and that kind of set-up increased the interesting factor for me by 10000%. They also told me about how there were a lot of named female characters that don't die as soon as they're introduced, including Abigail's backstory, and that the creator has said he'll never do a rape plotline, which I thought was classy as fuck. It was kinda one of those things where I was like "Well...okay, you guys, I guess I'll watch it" and ended up walking away really impressed with how little it bothered me given the subject matter.

Basically, it's not a "crime" show. There's a commitment to that hyper-reality, to keeping the violence from being too real, that makes the difference for me between shows I tolerate and shows I enjoy. It's not a "sympathetic white guys committing crimes" show like Dexter or Breaking Bad. Hannibal is interesting, but he's a Satan figure and the show is CLEAR about that from the beginning. He's not a random killer; his motivations are usually pretty decipherable, which takes a huge element of anxiety out of it for me, and is ultimately way more interesting. Will being a TOTAL FUCKING SWEETHEART but still struggling with his own mental health was not expected one bit, but I was super happy to see it. Abigail is amazing and I'm so interested to see where her role in the story goes. Yeah, I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did but it subverted my expectations.

If you could canonize three ships, which three would it be?
Saturday, June 1st, 2013 06:30 am (UTC)
Zuko/Katara, always and forever.

Kitty/Cormac from the Kitty Norville series. Kitty married someone else, it was awful, and I stopped reading the books. Both because I hated the actual canon relationship Kitty was in and because it was clear that the author had deliberately written Kitty and Cormac’s relationship to be shippy as fuck, KNOWN that the readers were going to ship them, and then didn’t do it, just to fuck with her readers.

Carol/Jess, I just want these two ladies to make out. And also be in panels together were Jess is not wearing her horrific costume.

What three pairings would you erase from canon?

Agreed so hard on Zutara. And YES on Carol/Jess.

What three pairings would you erase from canon?

Sif/Thor. Many times over. I hate that it's entrenched in almost 40 years of comic backstory. I hate that Jane was thrown under the bus for it. I hate that it's just a given in the comics that Sif will one day be one of Thor's wives and bear his children and die no matter how much of a name she makes for herself. I hate that there is no way I can see it happening in the MCU without Sif being made a prize for Thor and Jane being trashed by the narrative for it. I hope I'm wrong. I hope that if they do Sif/Thor in the movies it will surpass my every expectation. Based off the way it is in the comics and what it represents for Sif and Jane? I'm hostile at best.

Hermione/Ron. I don't hate this one as passionately as I was never hugely into HP fandom, aside from brief sprints of interest, but I didn't like Hermione/Ron so much. They have that sitcom coupling of the clever girl and the loveable loser. I wanted more for Hermione.

Anytime I've watched a movie with a love triangle and the female character is in a relationship with a guy I actually like, and then goes on an adventure with an asshole and somehow that asshole represents freedom and is a better option somehow?

Ooooh, I like your answers.

What tends to draw you to an AU?
Saturday, June 1st, 2013 06:41 am (UTC)
AU: understanding of the characters

That’s a big one to me, because it’s where most AU’s go right off the rails – right at the beginning when they’re setting up the world.

One of the best Avengers/Thor AU’s I’ve come across had Loki as a lawyer and Sif as a cop – and it worked BEAUTIFULLY. They are still one the same ‘team’, nominally, but they are each playing to each other’s strengths, and the friction between police officers and the DA mirrored their friction with regards to Thor’s ability to rule in Thor.

One of the worst Avengers AU’s I’ve ever read had all the Avengers at summer camp and had Natasha being foster-siblings and really chummy with all the Avengers (sans Barton, who also wasn’t nearly screwed up enough). Basically, the characters and the character dynamics were not recognizable. Actually, Natasha not being damaged, deadly, and in control is one of the places were SO MANY authors go wrong with Avengers AUs.

Do you prefer for want of a nail AUs (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ForWantOfANail) or completely different AUs (i.e. high school)

AU: understanding of the characters

Totally true.

I mean, I kind of understand the appeal of having AUs where the characters are happier than they are in their canons, but I definitely agree that the dynamics need to carry over in some significant way relative to the scope of the AU. NGL, it's hard to find that balance, which is why I tend to avoid writing them.

I would actually like to read that if you still have the link lying around because when I read that description my brain misfired several different ways.

I like both. I suppose I tend to write "for want of a nail" AUs more often, but I'm sort of on the fence at what point they can be considered true AUs, since the entire premise of fanfic seems to be "what would happen if..." I do really like playing with fundamental aspects of canon and seeing how the story shifts when you add or remove certain pieces.

However, under the right circumstances, I do enjoy AUs that just completely shift the setting.

I couldn't find it in my tags, so I'm going to put up a 'help me' post on my LJ. In the meantime, there's this. (http://vega-ofthe-lyre.livejournal.com/387058.html)

Also, my flist is brilliant (http://archiveofourown.org/works/283188).

Huzzah! I am reading them right now.

EDIT:

RN I am drowning in Sif/Loki feels tonight and that is all right.

Those fics were great. I loved the settings a lot. And the "post-Ragnarok" take on the AU is something I hadn't thought about before for this series but am now extremely intrigued by. Both fics handled that premise super well. I'm impressed!

Both fics also did an excellent job with names! It's so hard with Thor because their names are so setting and culture specific.

Thank you for tracking them down!
