Come talk to me.

lots tumblr_m09vqqJ12i1qg0u4go2_r1_250

It's Saturday night, I'm folding laundry, trying to convince myself to write my batfam fic, and basically just in general killing time until it's late enough that I can go to bed without waking up at 3 a.m. tomorrow morning.

Thoughts on Steph's friendship with Cass?
Sunday, November 10th, 2013 04:42 am (UTC)
It's wonderful and I love it. I love that Cass believes in Steph and that they have different strengths and that they can laugh about their horrible fathers together. And also that their hang-out involved rooftop tag and fighting evil.

Exactly! I was really blown away by how wonderful it was and how natural it felt.

Also, I don't quite get why it seems like everyone keeps underestimating Steph - emotionally, intellectually, and physically. It kind of feels like after they become friends, Cass is the person who never seems to underestimate Steph or think she can't handle it (at least not in the way that Bruce and Babs do).

Honestly, I feel like part of that was editorially mandated (Babs, Cass even has one moment of doubt, although hers involved taking a personal interest in Steph's training,) where it makes less sense for them to think she can't handle it, and part of it is because the people judging her were fucking dickheads (Bruce, Tim).

Also, muslin Ms. Marvel coming to comics soon - can I talk about how excited I am about that?
Sunday, November 10th, 2013 08:12 am (UTC)
I am so excited, for lots and lots of reasons!

She just looks cool. Plus, having a Muslim Ms. Marvel means that writers and artists should be way more conscious of how she's portrayed; not only will Carol's promotion not be unmade, it means that the Ms. Marvel name will likely never be nothing but boobs and an ass again (and if it is, it would be a Bad Idea).

I was surprised, but then I wasn't because I remembered the editor for Captain Marvel is a Muslim woman herself and is part of the social justice cabal that has formed at Marvel Comics rn. Also, apparently the writer they tagged for her lived and worked in Cairo for years and ran an anti-establishment magazine during Mubarrak's reign? Which is just badass beyond all measure.

I think one of the things I'm most pleased about is that it means Marvel NOW from last year wasn't just a fluke. I thought that after pushing for representation of women/queer people/poc, and then after some of those books were cancelled, like Fearless Defenders, they would backslide into traditional comics dudebro bs. But they haven't. What's amazing is that instead of backsliding based on what sold and didn't, they are trying new things with women, queer people, and POC.

asdfjk; I cannot think of a better way Marvel could have reclaimed the Ms. Marvel title.

Agreed. I love how it solidifies that Carol is CAPTAIN Marvel and I am all over lady legacy heroes. Plus, as much as I enjoy Carol's old outfit, I think the new Ms. Marvels (from what I've seen, and I'm not sure if that was official images) her outfit is functional, feminine, and modest.

Badass beyond measure is right!

God marvel.

just in general killing time until it's late enough that I can go to bed without waking up at 3 a.m. tomorrow morning

I know the feeling. It's crazy difficult for me to sleep lately - I wind up waking at 4am and exercising or vacuuming or doing dishes, etc. And then I get bored and go to work at 6:30am because my life is just that tragic.

ANYWAY. I'm not sure if you're keeping up with marvel_bang, but I just came across this Diner!AU featuring Carol/Jess that made me think of you (I don't know anything about the pairing, but I seem to recall you talking about them in various meme posts, so).

I've only started reading it and I can't vouch for it, but just FYI, in case you're interested: it's here. (http://archiveofourown.org/works/1042409)

That actually seems like a very productive thing to do with insomnia.

I DO ship Jess/Carol and that fic was delightful! Thanks so much for the rec!
